Best electric pump?

Well a year or so back I changed to an electric pump (red holley) and blocked off the mechanical...That one went out in February...today the blue one I replaced it with went out and now my car is stranded.

Currently it is wired straight to the fuse box to an accessory.

So my question is...Am I wiring these up wrong or do I need to find a different or better pump. Or should I do away with the electric pump and upgrade to a good mechanical pump. The main reason I switched was because my fuel was getting to hot running through the block.

Please help

you should have your pump wired independently of any other accessory, and ran with a relay and a fuse at both ends.... meaning main juice to relay and juice from relay to pump, just to be on the safe side... your ground should be a ground that is nice and clean and will not corrode or have the risk for corrosion... personally I would probably try and run the ground back inside the car somewhere...

Re: Best electric pump?

The pump is mounted behind the rear seats so it sits at an angle...

As for the wiring I don't have any inline fuses for it and the ground is on the outside of the car.

So should I refund the pump and get a better one? Or will an upgraded mechanical pump work even though i was having hot fuel problems before

Re: Best electric pump?

well as far as I know the F-bodys that were equipped with carb came with an intank assist pump working in conjunction with a mechanical pump, this was done to limit or eliminate the risk of vapor lock... I'd try a relay harness setup with inline fuses ...now on the brand of pump I wouldn't know... I mean you could put in an intank fuel pump and have a pressure regulator control the PSI...

Re: Best electric pump?

I have the regulator that came with the holley blue. I looking more for a external electric that works well on a daily driver that sees hot and cold temperatures and long distance drives. Right now I'm just going to replace the stock mechanical and return the holley. From what I have read the holleys seem to be kinda shitty for continuous flow on street cars. There is also no return line currently hooked up.

After 1984 they did. From 1982-84 you had to complain about having vapor lock to get a dealer fix that included an intank pump.

Only the '84-'85 L69's (and the few '86 L69's they made) had it from the factory. In '87, the LG4's got it as well.

Mine is an 84, L69 and doesn't have the intanke assist pump. I only had the mechanical one which was replaced when I swapped motors. I have a holly red pump now that works fine but only has 3k miles on it so that's not an indicator of life-span.

I'm not sure if mine has an intake assist. It might be unhooked if it does, I've never heard it. It is a 87 that came stock with a V8 however.

I guess if I start having problems with the fuel getting to hot I'll go back to a different electric hooked up with a relay and a good ground.

Re: Best electric pump?

the pump needs to be gravity fed. you need a bung at the bottom of your tank.

Re: Best electric pump?

How hard is something like that to do? Is it still safe for a DD being at the bottom of the tank.

Also any other suggestions for mechanical or electric fuel pumps that will work well?

Re: Best electric pump?

Well I fiddled with it today and touching the wires to the battery it pumped fine...

I'm assuming the ground was so bad that it wouldn't work...So if the car starts vaporlocking again I'll hook that back up with a relay and a ground inside.

Also how do you run a return line with this pump. Is that what the extra port on the regulator is for?

You need a regulator designed for a return line. Most likely the reg you have has two ports so you can run a line to each bowl on a dual feed Holley directly from the reg. I use my 2nd port to go to the nitrous system fuel solenoid.

Re: Best electric pump?

Ya that's what I was thinking. The regulator is the holley one that came with the pump. I'll be sure to look for one with a return line when I put it back on.
