holley
holley
i had a quadrajet but was wanting more performance. so i bought a used holley and had it rebuild. now its giving me problems and i wished i never took that quadrajet off. it has an electric choke but for what i dont know. because it will not stay running, unless i keep reving the motor until it is warm. then it still wants to shut off,so i rev a little more to keep it going. as soon as i put it in drive it will shut off unless i take foot off the brake and quick shift into drive. also when coming up to a stoplight, while waiting to proceed sometimes the car wants to shut off. please help!!!!!!!

Re: holley
Have you tried to tune the Holley at all? Or did you just throw it on after it was rebuilt?

Re: holley
It sounds like the choke is not set right, like the fast idle step cam is set way to low.

Re: holley
After a rebuild, any carb needs to be final tuned after it's installed... Lots of good information on the Holley site on how to tweak the carb, and a lot of good books available on Amazon and other book stores to help you get the best performance out of your carb....

Re: holley
sounds like a lean idle. try running the mixture screws out a little. check float level and fuel pressure.

I don't see any mention of changing the distributor.
I am assuming this is a stock 305, since the factory never put q-jets on 3rd gen f-body 350's. If that is indeed the case, a Holley (or any other carb) will not be a performance increase over the q-jet. We go over this time after time after time, but the message just doesn't seem to get through.
Put the q-jet back on.
Then go to the FAQ forum and look for the thread about differences between 305's and performance improvements. You'll see that the last thing to replace is the carb, and by then you no longer have a streetable car, anyway.

Re: holley
I was wondering how long before you told him to put the q-jet back on
. I figured since the OP said he wished he never took it off, he didnt have it around still to put it back on.
