need help quick!! fuel regulator question
ok i have already done the swap from tbi to carb and ive had it running great for awhile. ive been using a inline electric fuel pump then it went bad. so i bought a nice areomotive fuel regulator with summit pressure gauge on ebay for 27.59 ( i couldnt pass that up) it has a inlet in the bottom and a outlet on both sides. ive got it all hooked up. im using my intank pump now. i have my gas line coming in to the bottom and one goin to carb and other is going to return. now when i start the motor it shows 1/2 to 1psi of pressure? but when i clamp off the return line i get 6psi. is that normal? i drove the truck and hit the gas and it didnt bog? also i set it to 6psi with the return clamped off then relased the return. any advice? and is this just the way they are with the return?

which regulator did you get. sounds as though you have a regulator that is not a bypass regulator which is what is needed. the port you have for return is also a feed port. that is why you are loosing pressure with it open. if you look at the reg you have it prolly sais one in and the other two say out. is should say in on one, out on one, and ret on the other.

the only thing i can see doing is buying one of them cheap inline ones and put it on the return side. or drop the money and buy the right one.

how about this?? i took a hose clamp thats shaped like vice grips in a way. i took those and clamped the return line about halfway off and now its reading a good 4psi. would this work ok? im not looking to race it or anything just to drive back and forth to work everyday. do i have to have it at a full 6psi?

you could try it they way you have it but i wouldnt advise it. but hey its your car. you will need at least 4.5 psi.

ok thanks. ill try the cheap one that will go between my regulator and return line then. also how come when i first put it on it would read 1/2 psi to 1psi and i went down the road WOT and no problem at all never bogged out?

I wouldn't waste my money on that Spectre fuel pressure regulator. They make some real junk and their pressure guage and filter I tried both leaked.
Your Summit guage might not be giving you an accurate estimate of fuel psi. I bought one of their liquid filled ones recently and drove with it underhood. The engine temps alone caused it to become very inaccurate and erratic. According to it, I could drive down the road at WOT on less than 1 psi with no hesitation or bogging.

instead of trying to band aid the problem you need to break down and by the correct regulator for it. a bypass one. you are going to end up with a lot of problems down the road.

well thats what i will probly do then is just buy the right part. and im new to this whole carb world so what kind of problems am i looking at if i keep it this way? Thanks for all the good help!!

its only fuel. the most flammable thing in your car. but its your car. im sure there will be people that say nothing. i go by murphy's law. if it can it will. if you are comfortable with it then it is your decision. most if not all on here will tell you no dont do it. but if you feel comfy riggin it then do it. but dont ask correct info if you are going in that state.

Please please please get the right regulator. The mallory unit was on my carb conversion and worked great. If you buy a cheap and god forbid it fails you may loose all fuel pressure..... or it might not return at all and pump so much fuel in the bowls that fuel starts squirting out of every hole on the carb all over the top of the engine. I've seen this happen. If your car is hot when this happens it WILL burn to the ground!

It is possible to use the cheap type regulator with a restricted return to allow constant flow through the in-tank pump while retaining sufficient pressure at the carb. It's best to have a fuel pressure gauge you can watch while putting the vehicle under maximum fuel demand so you can observe the pressure. The least restriction that maintains fuel pressure under max demand is what you're looking for.
Of course, a return style reg like the 4309 takes care of that issue for you, and will flow more to keep the in-tank pump cool than a restricted return will.

well this is crazy but ive been driving it back and forth to work for 2 days and we took a 2hr trip in it and no problems? i have just left the return wide open so i know its flowing back to tank with no problems and my pressure reading going into carb is only 1lb max? i have done burn outs and passed several cars and no problems at all? now my question is am i going to hurt anything with it hooked up like this? again my return line is not rescricted at all.
