Getting really tired of this Edelbrock carb, need help

I have an 88 GTA with a 305, equipped with an Edelbrock intake and 1405 carb. I have been having a lot of nonstop issues with it that are really starting to get to me. I am about to go with a Holley, but money is too tight right now to be buying a new carb. The edelbrock has the stock jets and rods, and springs in it.

It does great driving around and at WOT, so while I have the calibration kit, haven't screwed with the jets or rods much. However once coming off WOT back to idle is where I have a problem. First, the rear driver's side secondary is flooding. The primary appears to be fine. If I go to WOT and the secondaries open, they both flood out. Then it runs real rough and stalls because now its flooded.

Whenever the car is warm and sits for more than a few minutes, I also have to crank and crank and crank the motor, along with give it a little gas, to fire up.

Also, the car has A/C and I have the Edelbrock idle compensate solenoid to increase the idle slightly when the A/C is on. After a few minutes with the A/C on, when I shut it off and the engine goes back to normal idle, it runs real rough and bogs down hard, sometimes stalls.

I rebuilt this carb using the edelbrock rebuild kit last summer, so everything internally that came with that kit is fairly new. I'm wondering if I have a gasket problem with the secondary venturis, but not only does gas shoot out there, it also shoots out the nozzle.

This thing is really doing a number on me, I see many people with these carbs and they never have any problems, I want and know my car should behave the same. So if anyone has any tips to help me fix this thing, please let me know. Thanks!

Are you running a fuel pressure regulator? Edelbrock carbs like a max of 5.5 psi of fuel pressure and if you are running anymore than that, it could cause flooding. Also, have you set your choke? If the engine doesn't want to start, try adjusting the choke. The manual that came with your carb has instructions on how to set it if you don't know how.

check fuel pressure, make sure the floats are set properly, the manual explains how or if you don't have a manual download one from here

well thanks everyone for the helpful replies bt no thanks to those whose solution was "get a holley". I reset the floats tonight, I had set them wrong after i rebuilt the carb because it was my first rebuild and misread the directions. seems to be running fine now, took her out and really ran her through the gauntlet and runs good.

Thats what I did with the 87 Camaro I have. I bought a new one out of the box tuned it right drove for 1 night at drag strip and 3 days and it started acting up again. I had a race shop tune it a week later it done same thing..

I just gave up and bought a 600 holley

Ultimately, power is about getting the correct AFR. I kind of like the AFB design for a street strip car. I know some people struggle to tune them. Not sure why.

I'd prefer EFI given the chance, but years ago, 80s, 90s when I was using carbs I had issues getting holleys to run consistent day to day.

i have had my share of cars over the years..some with q-jets...some with holleys and now with an edelbrock..the q-jets had minor issues but ran great and never failed,,great carbs....i haven;t had good experiences with holleys...they would run ok one day then the next day they were all over the place...i almost had to tune a holley from red light to red light!..i had them rebuilt by pros ,,same thing..my freinds insist on them , but they also admit they are fed up of holleys for an everyday driven car...now i have an edelbrock 1405 with electric choke..it ran great out of the box ..it was cheap and looks good...power is good and except for me running on empty and blocking something , it is a great easy carb....don't know why so much bashing,,,for a daily driver ,,if you don't have the q-jet ,,then an edelbrock is a good choice for the money.
