Quadrajet Rebuild

Hey all, I decided to do a quadrajet rebuild on here for all to see, this is my second and figure this forum could use a good non computerized rebuild thread so here I go. First of all this won't entail every exact step, but this will include most of the major things, and if you have any questions feel free to ask. First of all you're going to want to remove the choke, choke flap and linkage, once that's out of the way use a small punch, or a hex key if you don't have a small punch and tap out the roll pin that holds the acceleration plunger tab in place (as illustrated in pic 2) then remove all of the nine top screws as illustrated in pic two.

Re: Quadrajet Rebuild

From there I pulled the top off to find a fairly clean carb. I then took all my little parts and threw em' in my carb dip dish.

Re: Quadrajet Rebuild

While waiting on my little parts to dip, I went ahead and removed my base plate, after that I waited a while and pulled my little parts, and dipped my base, top, and main body. After a dip I epoxied the plugs with a two part epoxy that should hold up much better than JB weld.

I then decided to get the acceleration plunger spring and retainer swapped over from the old plunger to new. I then threw in the new check ball after taking a punch and reforming the seat with the old check ball.

Re: Quadrajet Rebuild

I then threw in my cleaned jets, after that the new needle and seat, as well as a float. And that's as far as I got tonight, I did notice upon tear down that the peice in pic 3 fell off, I don't know how crucial it is, but I think I can epoxy it back on, any thoughts?

It looks like a mounting point for the choke body. I think you'd be ok to apoxy it, as it is not a moving part. Once the choke housing is on it really shouldn't move verry far. I'd be sure to make sure it is the same length as the others so the choke mechanism doesn't bind.

Also just for interests sake what size jets and rods on the primary side and what secondary rods and hangar are in that carb?

And I would also like to know what you used to get it so clean!
Did you have it ultrasonic cleaned?

Thx.

Re: Quadrajet Rebuild

Piece that fell off appears to be the fast idle cam. It does have a bit of force on it, but if you epoxy it right, it should be fine. I believe it's on the primary throttle shaft though, as it controls the primary throttle opening when on fast idle..? You're a bit zoomed in for me to tell, but that's what I believe it is.

The fast idle cam mounts on the choke housing. The lock-out is on the plain stud to the rear.

I believe that is a vacuum passage for the choke (the hot air type pulls a little air through the "hot air" tube {that mounts in the exhaust crossover passage of the intake manifold} and choke housing to warm up the choke thermostat). Only the bottom part of the fracture appears to be fresh - the top part is discolored, indicating the crack was already there for quite awhile. You can try to epoxy it, but it will require very thorough cleaning of both surfaces, and careful alignment when you put it together and hold it in place for curing.

Re: Quadrajet Rebuild

I just dipped it ind napa carb dip for about thirty minutes then shot it with some carb cleaner in a can. I wire brushed the base place to get it really clean and shiny. Thanks for the advice on the vaccum passage it seems to have turned out well, I'll post pics later tomarrow.

Thanks, Dac
