swapping or changing over to a carb
hello i have a tbi on my 305 and i was wondering is it hard to switch to a carberautor? and also was wondering how much it would cost and what would i have to do? also was wondering if it adds any more horsepower and messes with the gas mileage? and one more thing does it make a sound difference?

You'd have to get a new intake manifold and a bunch of other stuff. It could cost a lot for everything unless you can find cheap parts. Your gas mileage will drop because carbs aren't as efficient as TBI.

A carb swap on its own won't necessarily give you any more power than TBI, and if done wrong could certainly give you less. It can make it easier and less costly to make more power if done in conjunction with a bunch of other necessary changes, though.

Re: swapping or changing over to a carb
I prefer the adjustability of a holley double pumper ( i have a 650 DP with an adjustable primary AND secondary metering block and a wide band hooked up) I have a 3500rpm stall converter and a 4:10 rear in my S10, (weighs ~2800lbs) it needed the dp the vac secondary carb I had on it never drove the way i wanted it to
though I love the concept of a Q-jet, I'll probably drop one on when i build a 302 for my trans am

Re: swapping or changing over to a carb
1) It's not legal, but depending on your state/county you might get away with it (obviously alot of us do)
2) It won't (on it's own) add any hp
3) You'll need a carb, intake, vac advanced dist, fuel pressure reg, and if you are automatic tranny, a TV cable corrector and a method to lock the torque converter - all that is about $600 - $800 depending on the carb and intake chosen
4) You WILL lose gas mileage! Properly tuned, your TBI should get almost 30 hiway, my carbed 350 only gets 17. The TBI F-bodies were the most fuel efficient V8's in the generation.

You can significantly boost the hp on your TBI and make it sound awesome if you do the right things to it. And it will save you the mpg's. First thing, is good quality headers and a true dual exhaust. You will notice the power difference and sound right off the bat with that. And that will cost about the same as swapping to a carb.

Re: swapping or changing over to a carb
Your best bang for the buck on 'seat of the pants' feel will be rear gears - start hunting the classifieds/craigslist etc. for a rear end with posi and better gears - in my 1990 I swapped from 2.73 to 3.08 and could feel it easily - 3.23's, 3.42's, or 3.73's will be a vast improvement. 3.42s are a good street gear - feels alot better off the line and still maintain some decent hiway mileage.
Exhaust is going to depend on brands etc. Headers and Y-pipe about $500, another $150 for muffler, your stock I pipe flows plenty right now. Have no idea on cat prices or if you need a new one. Duals are cool and all, but no real need with a 305 - not sure there's much of a need even with a 350 unless it's pretty large hp numbers.

Re: swapping or changing over to a carb
The gear swap doesn't add hp, but I do agree it is definately something you can feel and is worth the upgrade. Don't really need a dual exhaust, but headers over manifolds is a must.
