Carb noob needs some help

I finally have the money to buy a new carb to replace my fuel-leaking Quadrajet. I want to buy a holley 4160 to replace it. I'm also thinking about about buying an Edelbrock intake with the square/bore flange or a just a $14 adapter from jegs. My TA has a 305 with auto trans, am I going to need a Tv geometry corrector and if I do which kind would be best. If i need anything else to switch carbs please tell me. I'll post some pics of my current carb & intake. I also don't know what kind of transmission I have I'll have to check sometime

Re: Carb noob needs some help

First off is this car a daily driver, or a race car? if it's a daily driver I wouldn't go with a holley carb. Holley makes some of the best carbs on the market, and I love them. But they are very sensative to climate changes you will probably have to change the jetting in it from time to time to make it run at it's best. If you want to put a carb on, and set it 1 time and not worry about it, I would go with an Edelbrock, or a Carter carb. If this car is going to be for the street, I would go with a dual plane intake, and not a single. Something like a Edelbrock Victor Jr. You need to know where your car makes it's power as far as RPM's are concerned so you can pick the right intake. As far as an adapter plate the taller the plate the better the fuel will atomize before entering the combustion chamber. Be carefull that you check hood clearence befor you get your setup as most aftermarket setups are taller than stock. If the car is gonna be on the track from time to time and you don't mind changing jets and tuning the car, go with a single plane intake (check the RPM range it's good for), 1in carb spacer and a Holley. The TV cable you get will have to match what trans you have. You local NAPA or parts store should be able to help ya there.

Re: Carb noob needs some help

Fisrt thing to find out is what ignition and distributor you are running. If you have a regular, non-computer controlled HEI, you will be okay. Emissions...your car wont pass. May not be a big deal if you can find someone to put a sticker on there (if it is just a track car, then no problem). To give some carb and intake advice, we need to know more about the engine. Is it the stock 350?

Re: Carb noob needs some help

Get that thing off of there.

Someone's installed a front fueled ccc-qjet on your '89 and your car doesn't have the computer system to control it.

Is the correct throttle cable bracket in place? Does it still have the original computer controlled distributor or has it been swapped to a vac advance unit? Take a few more pics showing everything.

Unless you're looking at a fairly stout 350 that's going to see something above 5000 RPMs ALOT, that stock style intake isn't holding you back much. Your cheapest option may be a reman mechanical qjet on your existing intake. Unless you've got some cam and a GOOD exhaust don't waste any time or money on a new intake yet.

Here are some pics. I don't like the way the they made the cables reach by putting some wire on them, do I need to replace them? Also the transmission is a 700R4

Re: Carb noob needs some help

Interesting.... It has a TPI wiring harness, Non-3rd gen CC Qjet, No ECM control, vac advance distributor, wrong throttle cable bracket, how were you even able to drive it?!

Anyway, your stock TV cable should work just fine, but that is a TPI throttle cable, try to find a throttle cable from a TBI or Carb'd thirdgen to swap it out. Get a new throttle cable bracket to suit whichever carburetor you choose. That distributor will work fine so no need to change it. FYI I have a holley 670 on my car and it has the proper bracket, I am swapping to a Rochester carb soon. So I don't know how long until you wanted to get this swap started/done but I will be putting my carb and stuff up for sale when I get mine swapped over to stock. PM me if you're interested.

I think I'm going to get a holley 4160, If I'm not mistaken I'll need these two http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HL...n/?prefilter=1 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-20-121/

Do you have those?

The car runs pretty good, its a bit hard to start sometimes, at least 2 tries.

Thats the throttle cable bracket I have on mine, but I don't have the corrector bracket. I am not sure of the model Holley that I have, but I know its 670cfm and works perfect. (It's on my daily driver)

Re: Carb noob needs some help

I found the holley 20-95 and 20-121 parts on amazon for almost the same price as summit with free shipping, I think I'm going to order those soon so when I get my new carb, I'll be ready to go.

I lost the throttle return spring and I want to know which I should buy, should I just buy a spring and attach it where it is on the pic or should I buy a bracket and do it right.

Also while I was cleaning the engine a bit, I decided to finally see the casting numbers on it. It turns out I have a 305 instead of a 350 that the PO said it had. I had a feeling who ever made these "mods" just switched to carb because it still has the stock exhaust manifolds, they just bent the tubes shut.

Re: Carb noob needs some help

I went ahead and bought a holley 4160 along with what it needed. The tv cable hooked up pretty good (without the wire!). I want to replace the throttle cable since that wire is going to cut it.

what throttle cable will I need that will fit pretty good, Also are these a pain to replace? thanks

Re: Carb noob needs some help

Also just an FYI Billy, with that adapter, you want to be completely sure that the plunger in the transmission is completely buried when the carb is at WOT. If you are unsure what plunger I am speak of check the photo.

http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/...D/100_0726.jpg

You will find it right under the pan on the passenger side of the trans where the TV cable comes in.
So adjust the TV cable appropriately to this spec and you will doing the transmission a great favor and not slowly killing it.

Re: Carb noob needs some help

to fix your throttle cable problem you need to order a part from lokar p/n 1034 from summit or jegs, i got it for my tpi to carb swap.
