Help! Strange Problem!!!

I have a 85 z28 with the carbed LG4. It will crank right up in the morning or if it been sitting but sometimes after i drive it around a lot it will not crank right up. This doesnt happen all the time but when i try to crank it, its like the starter is dragging barely turning and it will eventually crank up after a few seconds. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Re: Help! Strange Problem!!!

If starter is acting sluggish, sounds like a battery/alternator issue - have both checked - can be tested i car at almost any parts store.

well thing is i bought a brand new battery and alternator about 2 months ago. i think its a bad connection somewhere because sometimes the volt gauge will not be over 13 where it should be. but here lately the voltage has been good

Re: Help! Strange Problem!!!

New doesn't mean good - have them tested. Last "new" alternator I bought was overcharging and I had to get a free replacement. At least if nothing else, a free testing of both will rule out those as a possibility.

Heat sink is most likely killing your starter by increasing the resistance when the car is hot. Once that is occurring the your starter solenoid is likely damaged. You can try installing a heat shield or blanket but I recommend getting a Hitachi style Corvette starter. I bought one on ebay from California a few years ago and that solved my starter problem (same symptoms as yours) the new style is much lighter so easier to install too. I needed a pack of starter shims when installing. Went through 3 oem style starters before that.

You can or even install a ford style on the fender. There some stuff on that to be found - try the search feature
