Any particular reason you are considering doing this?

Lead foot
[Can't stay out of all 4 if they are there, they can be locked out on a qjet if temptation is to much.]

Re: 2 barrel conversion

the car is going to be my dd and a 305 isnt exactly fuel effiecient so if a 2 bbl uses less gas that would be good.

The driver has more to do with the fuel consumption rate than the carb.

Re: 2 barrel conversion

17 MPG city....you can do it if you don't mind being a slow and patient driver.

17 MPG highway...that's easy with a 305, especially if you have an overdrive transmission. If you've got a healthy 305 and 700-R4, you can hit low/mid 20s without too much difficulty.

You probably need to start thinking about a good tune up first, and making sure all of the basics are good. I can't really imagine how a 2 barrel swap would be worth the effort unless you've got a nice fresh 2 barrel carb sitting around and your 4 barrel unit is worn out.

If its a qjet, you can easily lock out the back two.

Re: 2 barrel conversion

On my 1987 LT with the 4bbl. 305, i've gotten anywhere from 9 mpg's (Lead Foot) to up to 18+ mpg (normal, everyday driving in rare non stop n go driving). A well tuned vehicle with clean filters and a good tune up will yield those numbers. So I am in agreement with 80smetalfan

Is your Camaro the only vehicle you have?

Re: 2 barrel conversion

Most people don't believe it but my old daily driver '85 Trans Am with an LG4/auto would get 25 MPG city and 30 highway.

I know it's hard to believe but there are other people (at least one on here) that can confirm it. The car was just a MPG freak.

I believe the 30 MPG highway. My old 91 with a L03 TBI/700R4 and 2.73s could do 30 MPG highway pretty easily. I even did one 1500 mile trip over a weekend where it was nearly all long highway drives and hit 33 MPG at one point. Lots of people on the TBI boards have gotten 25-30 MPG with L03 cars.

It's all in the tune. Even on these Quadrajet cars, you can get away with pretty good mileage if you spend some time getting a good fuel tune and getting your ignition timing dialed in. I have no chance of getting anywhere close to 25 city with my 455 car, but I can do better than 20 on open highway driving without too much trouble. I know a guy with a built 11-1 Caddy 500ci in a 80s Regal and a 200-R4 that gets 21-22 MPG on the highway with a Quadrajet.

Re: 2 barrel conversion

Driving to and from San Diego I average between 26-28 mpg. The quadrajet is a good carb if properly tuned. Btw, anyone tried that Holly fuel injection carb replacement that has the injectors that look like four eggs?

Re: 2 barrel conversion

All depends on how fast you drive city, if your doing 50 plus in the city with few stops.......

How I get high city in mine, all very long country blocks, that let you do near 50 or more without worry.

I suspected as much, so that's why I asked.

You won't do better than the stock computer q-jet for fuel economy. The 2 bbl is older, bigger, has less refined circuits, and will use more gas than the q-jet.

To say nothing of the gas you can buy with what converting to a 2 bbl will cost you.

Re: 2 barrel conversion

the 2 barrel carb wont change much but the fact that your secondaries wont open up past 4 grand ish, obviously cause they arent there. save yourself the work just drive conservative :] thats how i get my MPG with my Camaro. Plus on a stock q-jet the primaries are small they provide quick take-offs and use less gas. My dad took off his 750cc holly carb and but back on his stock q-jet to save gas and now he gets 24 MPG around NYC
