Re: 91 formula rpm airgap
MIne fit under the hood of my stock 1990 IROC hood. The key is to use a drop base for an L88 Corvette. I found a reproduction online and it cost around $50. This base with a 3" aircleaner and lid left plenty of room. I can even fit a 1/2" spacer. With the 1/2" spacer, I had to use a bolt to hold the aircleaner on (not enough room for a stud and a wingnut). I am not sure how different the Formula hoods are as compared to the IROC hoods.

I have an old set of AFR heads and a BG Demon Carb. I am 100% positive that a normal air cleaner (non-drop base) will not work.

The Spectre 9in round cleaner housing with the included 2in tall filter fits fine under a Camaro hood - no spacers/banjo bolts for carb linkage/choke/fuel fitting clearance, no cleaner housing bottom rubbing plug wires at distributor, $30 on the shelf at autozone, and filter is rechargeable like a K&N.

Re: 91 formula rpm airgap
Ok think i found something that might work but got a few more things I bought a set of vortec heads and not really sure if I'm gonna have clearance problems there flat top pistons with 4 valve reliefs .40 over and what size carb to go with I really like the holley HP 750 but kinda worried that I will drop $500 on it and will be to much carb? Any thoughts?

Re: 91 formula rpm airgap
what cam are you planning?
Personally I think the 750 is too big. I wouldnt go over 650.

Re: 91 formula rpm airgap
Was thinking about going with comp cams xe274 but not really dead set on anything right now just wanna be able to make more power and get this thing to run up to 6500 rpm right now the nose drops at 4500 the heads that are on it are junk the motor came out of a 87 half ton just had it rebuilt never changed the heads that's why I bought the vortec heads I heard they flow pretty good

Re: 91 formula rpm airgap
remember stock springs on vortec heads are obly good till about .470 lift. Id say a 350 with that cam and vortec heads a 650 should do fine
Oh and i ran an airgap intake and a Holley drop-base air cleaner and just barely cleared the hood of an 86 Z28

Re: 91 formula rpm airgap
proper tuning is key to any carb.
I only have a 600 on mine and it will really surprise you how good the car runs. My s10 only has a 650 and is pushing 435hp. You dont need big carbs if you get the ones you have setup correctly. A larger carb can sometimes produce a higher peak hp number, but you wont necessarily see it across the chart.
