Help please with 1407 edelbrock
I had a 383 installed in april with a edelbrock 1407 carb with an electric choke In my 91 rs. Everything ran fine for a month or two but recently I have been having problems getting it running. I pump the pedal once to prime the pump and try to start and it wont start , it will turn over but no start. If I spray starter fluid it will start for a little while then die, Eventually after several repeated starts it will eventually stay running but still sometimes dies. It kinda acts like it is not getting enough Gas Which I have a fuel pressure regulator set up so I know its getting gas from the tank. I have tried adjusting to make it run alittle richer and that hasn't helped. I need to figure out how to fix this cause it is getting really frustration, my fan is set up to run as long as the key is turned and if it takes several tries my battery dies on me and I have to jump it...Please anybody have suggestions.

what type of fuel pressure regulator, high dollar adjustable, or a parts store unit with a big dial on the top? what is your fuel pump set up?
750cfm is plenty of carb. and you may not need to prime it...will it start if you hold the pedal to the floor? possibly flooded.
was it just thrown on or was it adjusted properly from the get go? try setting it up per the edelbrock manual.
just some ideas to get you started....

Well I have stock fuel pump, its an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, m carb and everything elese was profesionally installed so I assume it was set up right. It does not start if I hold down the gas.

Re: Help please with 1407 edelbrock
please be more specific...stock fuel pump tells me nothing. was it a 305 TBI car, or a V6 car, is it a stock fuel pump mounted to the 383 block....
is the regulator a return style regulator with a hose that leads back to the tank?
most edelbrocks can be thrown on an engine and they will run fairly well without any tuning, that doesn't mean that they are calibrated properly per the manual.
is the choke functioning properly, i believe 1407's generally come with a manual choke...was this one converted?
i bet if you put the carb back to the "start over" settings in the manual, and tuned it properly, you wouldn't have any issues. you may want to also adjust your choke, as that may have something to do with it.

Pumping the pedal before starting doesn't "prime the pump". It squirts some fuel into the intake manifold (assuming there is fuel in the carb fuel bowls at the time), and allows the choke to close (if you have an automatic choke - as stated, if you have a manual choke, you need to close the choke while the pedal is depressed).
If you have a manual choke and haven't hooked it up, you need to either convert the carb to electric choke, or hook up a choke cable so you can close the choke from inside the car.
It's possible your electric fuel pump isn't running until the engine has started. Depending upon how this "professional installation" was done, they may not have kept the priming relay active, so your fuel pump isn't getting power until there is oil pressure.
The question about what type of fuel pressure regulator is also important. If a cheap dead-head regulator was used, then it makes some sense that the car seemed to run well for awhile, and now is having problems - as in, the fuel pump is toast because the wrong type of regulator was used.

It almost sounds like the time I forgot to hook my accelerator pump linkage back up after a jet change.
If you dont think its not getting any fuel pop the top plate off the carb and see if the fuel bowls have fuel, if they are not at least half full fill them with about 3/4 to 1 inches of fuel and restart (remember to hook acc. pump linkage back up).

Re: Help please with 1407 edelbrock
Sorry for not responding sooner been busy with work and school, I had a v8 tbi stock everything before the engine upgrade, I went with a return style fuel pressure regulator, the pump is still in tank, It has and electeric choke conversion on it, I got her running better by messing with the adjustment screws on the carb I set it to run a little richer however, it still has a hard time starting but it starts quicker now. Also as far as I can tell all the linkage its hooked up right.

Re: Help please with 1407 edelbrock
The adjustment screws are idle speed on the throttle linkage and idle mixture for the left and right cylinder banks, they dont do much for under load running.
My at 4400 ft adjustment for the idle mixture screws is to screw them all the way in and back the off about a half turn when warm. It wont idle very good when cold but will provide a lean 17 to 1 idle to clean the plugs.
