Red hot headers

not sure if this question belongs here but here goes anyway. i have a 84 TA with a swaped in 383 stroker motor that we're runing a 750 holley on. problem is, since we just put new plugs in for some reason the headeers seem to heat up very fast and start to glow bright red. does anyone know what would make this happen? i dont plan on running the holley for to much longer just threw it on there cause it was better than the quadrajet i had laying around and the new spark plugs were gapped to .045 cause we werent sure what else to gap them at also been playing with the timming, not sure where thats at at the momment

Re: Red hot headers

the timing could be off causing the fuel to burn in the headers

Re: Red hot headers

sounds like the timing is off pretty good or/your carb is running lean. whats your initial and total timing set at? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYGU7mTwsZc

Re: Red hot headers

gonna have to get back to you guys on the timming. not sure where its at right now cause we keep messing with it to get the car to fire up and run when its cold. we dont have the electric choke hooked up so its a bit hard to start when its cold

Re: Red hot headers

fix the timing.

then fix the choke and everything else that probably isnt dialed in on the carb.

Re: Red hot headers

Just grab the dist body and twist it CCW, and see what happens. Precision and "marks" and "lights" and all that, are not necessary at this point.

Then tune the carb.

Either an excessively rich condition (too much fuel, the leftover is still burning inthe header tubes) or excessively lean (burns too slow, combustion still in progress in the tubes) can cause that. Shouldn't be too hard to figure that out. If it has the burn-your-eyes stinky idle, it's too rich; if it's hard to start and putters out and dies unless you pump the gas pedal and backfires if you wing it, it's lean.

Incidentally, it's "timing", not "timming"... that last sounds like something we'd catch my little bro Tim doing in the closet, that his mom always told him would make him go blind if he didn't stop.

Re: Red hot headers

pulled the holley off today and put the old quadrajet back on idels great now and no red hot header problem. turns out the holley is a big piece of crap. the secondarys were filling up and then dumping tons of fuel straight down into the motor. the quadrajet is fine for now gonna look around for an edelbrock. still got alot more work to do with the timing. the video was helpful. ive timed plenty of other cars just didnt realize there was so much other stuff that play a role in how well the motor runs through the rpm curve. gonna buy a distributor spring kit and play with that and see if that helps out throttle response. i appreciate all the feed back, people on this forum are the best!

Change your oil before driving it.
