A K&N is not "better". It lets dirt particles through that paper filters stop. That's how they flow more (although a paper filter flows plenty to feed a q-jet). I pity the fools that waste their money on them, because they're sending their engine to an earlier death.

According to Autozone's website (and Advance Auto's website), the Fram filter is CA327. The STP filter is SA327. I don't see a listing for Spectre, but I don't know why you would want to use one of theirs.

Wix makes good stuff: http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?code=42101-EA

For the record, the L69 and LG4 air cleaners use the same air filter element.

The only thing i know for sure about those oil based air filters is that KN posted a bulletin about if you have a MAF sensor the oil seeps through and coats the sensor, giving you a lower reading for your engine, which ultimitly MAY make your transmission work harder/irregular and cause it to blow.

My boss had one on his diesel and it kept tripping his maf sensor and his engine light would come on, so he did the smartest thing possible...threw it out

Same thing that's wrong with a K&N - in order to get decent air flow, they have to have larger openings between the fibers, which allow more dirt particles through.

Re: i feel dumb for asking

ive had bad experiences with spectre products. fuel regulater was a joke. fuel filter is a restrictive POS. not sure about the air cleaners, but based on my experience, id find something better.

Re: i feel dumb for asking

does enough get through to really hurt the carb? i mean i know the l69 airbox is supposed to have better flow then the regular lg4 airbox but it seems pretty restrictive still to me, i just wanted a better flowing filter to let more air through if its geting there at all, i'm not gonna run an open fiter, just looking for a replacement for the original filter (atleast i think so)

Dirt doesn't hurt the carb. It is sandpaper to your rings and cylinders. Also gets into the oil and does the same to your bearings and lifters.

Yes. Nothing wrong with Puralator, either (when new).

Re: i feel dumb for asking

You can also get a taller air air cleaner lid from a Monte Carlo or similar car and use a taller paper air filter. After reading the K&N dirt particle comments and experience with my Ford Explorer's wire sensor getting filthy, I am going back to paper.

Paper or plastic lol I believe I will get a paper one also. It is almost always damp here in the rain forest but on the dry dusty days I will run paper.

Just got off work and just read your post and all that makes that sound a little better is the squealing of tires and the smell of burning rubber-smells like victory.

Re: i feel dumb for asking

Well a little smoke on start up is OK but it means valve stem seals a little weak. Now if you are pumping the gas and then cranking on cold mornings then you are probably washing the oil of the cylinder walls.

We don't want to dad an F on his trouble shooting but I have thought about this. Dad could also be right I need to know what one of your spark plugs looks like after you pull one out.

Re: i feel dumb for asking

Do a cyl leakage test and build yourself a 14" by 3" duel snorkel air cleaner.
