Intake and Carb Question - Using 82-84 Cold Air Scoop + Carb Cover?
Sup guys,
Need some input on the setup that's going into my car.
I want to keep my stock hood and stock 82 air cleaner.
The setup as it sits right now has a Vortec Edelbrock Performer RPM 7116 intake, Holley 600 carb, and vacuum advance distributor. I haven't had a chance to check hood clearance as I have not had the hood over it yet, but from the looks of it, it will be tight.
I really want to rebuild and run my CC-Qjet with the CC-distributor to keep the check engine light off and for code reading to still be functional. The problem here is I would need an adapter plate for the intake which means it will most likely not clear my hood. The other option is to change intakes, but I have looked and there is no Performer RPM spread bore, just Performer spread bore. Is there an equivalent intake to the Performer RPM in spreadbore/dual plane that you can buy for a reasonable price (>$200)? Would running just a Performer be good enough?
What do you guys think?
Specs:
1.5 rockers
Cam- (check when I get home)
Pistions- (check when I get home)
~9.1 compression
True-dual exhaust with headers
2.73 rear
4-speed stick

Re: Intake and Carb Question
I know for a fact that my RPM intake accepts both spread and square bore so I don't see an issue there.
Your hood will not close with that intake and the factory air cleaner (believe me, I know). The only way to make the hood work is to but any L88 Corvette drop base air cleaner, but that will not work with the CC Quadrajet because of the TPS (again, I've tried) and if you use your Holley you may have to grind down the tube that sticks up with the L88 cleaner.
My factory hood is in sad condition due to the rust underneath so I removed the bracing in the center to see if that would make enough room but that didn't help at all.
The easiest thing to do is to use the non RPM intake and will allow you to use your factory throttle brackets - but where is the fun in that?
I have some pictures in my signature if that would help.

Re: Intake and Carb Question
Thanks for the info.
I looked through your thread. Your intake is a spreadbore intake. The one I have does not have the spread out grinding for the secondaries. It's just two parallel slots. Also, I'm not completely sure, but your intake 'neck' looks taller than mine. What is the part # of yours? I know Vortecs have a different intake from pre-96 SBCs.

I believe the Performer RPM intake only comes in square bore not spread. Go with the spread bore Performer intake if you want to use the quadrajet. I did not notice any difference switching from the Performer to Performer RPM.

I'm using 7104, a spread bore manifold that accepts either spread or square bore with no adapters needed.
I looked on Edelbrock's site and the only intake the make for Vortec's in the RPM version is a square bore carb. Unfortunately it IS the same height as mine and sadly it will not fit w/o an L88 drop base cleaner.

Thanks for the responses guys.
IROCtheRoad-
Vortecs have intakes which only work on Vortecs. They only make a Squarebore RPM. The regular Vortec Performer comes in spreadbore, which is what looks like I will go with.
Cosmik-
I managed to get the hood on yesterday. It closes with the stock air cleaner, BUT it flexes it up past the fenders. I have the underhood fiberglass material on there along with the cold air solenoid setup.
oamhmad-
This is what I'll end up doing. Time to rebuild the QJet.
