got it started now motor wont shut down???

finally got the car started. the problem was i was not getting over 8volts when cranking. resolved by running a wire strait from battery to distibutor. i am going to wire in a switch to fip it on and off.
I have a quick question. the motor still runs after I turn the key off. I know the dist is being directly powerd by the battery and wont shut off with the key being off (unitl i put in a relay or switch). I have an elcetiric fuel pump that i have wired in relay so when the key is on the fuel pump is on, when the key is off the fuel pump is off. so if my fuel pump shuts off when i turn the key off, why does my motor keep running like a champ after the fuel pump is turned off (the inline fuel pressure gauge goes from 5 1/2 psi running to no psi but the motor still runs and i dont mean sputter, i mean there is no change in idle note, it runs. weird?

I assume it is but seems kinda strange since the fuel pump is below the carb and the fuel has to travel upsteam to get into the carb but i guess it is getting sucked (vacuumed) up to the carb. still i always thought these motors took alot more than 1psi or siphoning to run so strong

#1, I would try to wire the distributor to the ignition. That way you don't have to worry about forgetting to flip an extra switch. #2, another possibility is that the bowls in the carb still have gas in them and the engine will still run fine untill they are completely empty.
