Carb recommendation for a 350 5 Speed Combo
Hi, I currently have the electronic Q Jet on the car, I have a Gm 350 along with a 5 Speed, My other mods are in my Sig Below, Just wondering what carb is recommended, It is not a daily driver but I am looking for a good reliable carb,I am also looking for an HEI Dist to go along with it.
By Changing the Carb and Dist is there anything else I need to do? can I just take the Check engine bulb out and worry about it after this?

Edelbrock Performer intake manifold (if this is the Goodwrench crate engine). Performer RPM if you improve the heads and cam. Holley 650 double pumper with electric choke kit. MSD 8361 vacuum/mechanical distributor (you will have to use your 6AL box with it), MSD 8207 coil.
Leave the ECM in place. Just remove the SES bulb.

I have a Performer Edelbrock intake already on the motor, And I have a Accell Coil, so I can just get the carb and the MSD Dist? Is there one where I can use or Don't have to use the 6AL?

Sorry, missed your additional question (that was a busy time for me...).
If this Super Coil is the in-cap type, then something like an Accel 59107 would be fine. MSD makes a similar distributor, and there are several other choices (Summit brand, for instance).
I have an Accel distributor I bought when out of town and my ignition box crapped out on me. Not much running time. Let me know if you're interested.

Yes it is a in Cap Coil, I am looking for a nice Dist that works well a MSD 6 AL, I need it to be adjustable for advance and what not.

Spoke to Holley and they Recommended the 600 CFM Double Pumper, Or the 650 DP.
As far as DIST go Should I go in cap Coil ( HEI ) or Separate Coil/Dist?
Do I need a adjustable Vac advance or not?

Why do you want to replace the Qjet? It's perhaps the most reliable carb you can get.

Re: Carb recommendation for a 350 5 Speed Combo
I put this motor in about ten years ago, Onl has around 3,000 miles on it, Ever since I put this motor in I have been chasing a backfire though the exhaust on decel, I tried a Different Q Jet, Different Exhausts played with a lot of stuff and a lot of time, the only thing that has changed it and made it stop was when I unplugged the 4 pin wire going to the Dist. When this car had the 305 you could be in third gear going down a ten mile hill and never get a pop, I also had a Summit 350 with a 750 DP and the same thing never did it ever pop, This motor pops none stop. I hate the sound and want it to stop, Figured I would try this.

Backfire is usually a timing issue in my experience. Rarely the "Carb". Something on the set up must be a little wonky.

I don't think it is the carb either but I have played with the dist and replaced and adjusted everything I can thing of, I had the dealership mess with it also a few times along with the local hot rod shops, The only way I can try a different Dist is to swap the carb also.
I tried different E Proms, Replaced the parts in this Dist.

Valve's out of alignment? Broken valve spring? If it's not obvious, maybe something is "hurt" inside the motor causing it. Have you pulled the valve covers to look at your lifters, springs etc.?

I Had it checked by the shops, they said they checked the valves and they also said the motor runs to good to have any of those issues, this motor runs great smooth quiet, just have the decel issue.

Re: Carb recommendation for a 350 5 Speed Combo
Maybe you have the secondaries to rich in the carb. Does it always backfire or just from WOT. Try getting it into the higher rpms without opening the secondaries then letting off if it doesn't do it then you could look into that. Also if your choke isn't releasing it will run rich and will cause a popping sound out the exhaust. It seems I read somewhere if you don't give vortec heads enough timing the will backfire.

Re: Carb recommendation for a 350 5 Speed Combo
And if you do decide to switch a coil in cap will be fine. I run the mallory HEI. Its what you have now with vacuum advance. It is probably the best deal you will find unless five7kid will give you a deal on the accel. The 650 dp 4777c will do you well if you give up on the q-jet.

Re: Carb recommendation for a 350 5 Speed Combo
It will do it all of the time, it does not start right away and does not do it if you are just revving it up, It is on Decel only and it takes a few seconds to start doing it. but once it starts it does it none stop, the only thing that has ever stopped it was When I un plugged the 4 wire cont that you unplug to set the timing. I don't think it is a choke issue because it did it when the choke was working and I also had tried a new carb from Sean Murphy the guy who is all of the Mag's for rebuilding Q Jets and what not.

I don't think it would run well, but if you had the distributor off a tooth, I've heard that causing backfire issues. It's just the more you say it and how it does it, keeps bringing me back to a valve train issue. You've tried just about everything else that can be checked.

Re: Carb recommendation for a 350 5 Speed Combo
I installed the 650 Ultra DP and MSD Billet large cap Dist, I must say that it is running quite weel, Fuel Mileage is down but that is not that big of a deal, teh car sits more then it is driven.
I have it at a local tuners place now to see if he can Dial the carb in, I do think it is a bit rich.
