87 gta+built carbed 350=more questions fp

does anyone have a picture or a simple diagram of how a in tank fuel pump is supposed to be wired from the top of the tank down to the pump?i just pulled the pump out after finding one of wires cut off right above rubber plug in the tank lid and the purple wire ran between the lid and and the lock ring! they have the power(gray)running to a butt connector with two wires coming out the other end.one goes to a terminal on the pump, the other to a spade mounted on one of the tubes.the other side of the pump goes to the rubber plug wire that is cut off.the sending unit wire (purple)was the one running between the lid and ring.my computer and harness is gone and i was trying to figure out how to do the simple switch on the power side thing and found this.help!

Re: 87 gta+built carbed 350=more questions

ok,after thinking about this for a minute,i only see 3 wires coming to the tank.one is black and mounted directly to the lid so this is a ground, right? so that leaves the gray which i'm assuming is 12v and the purple which must be for the sending unit.only two wires go through the rubber plug so the gray goes to the hot side of the pump and the other terminal on the pump goes to the spade on the tube only.then the sending unit has to go to the purple wire(the other wire going thru the plug)if that is correct i need to know if it's safe to use butt connectors on the wires in the tank, because there is one on every wire at present.

You are correct. I thought it was weird the first time I saw it (spade connectors) but it works. The older ones have the spade terminals and the newer ones have the small pin connector style from what I have seen. Just make sure the connections are tight when you plug them in.

ok and the crimp type butt connectors?i guess none of the connections are "gas proof"so this wont be a problem?thanks for responding,i appreciate the confirmation.

I prefer to solder the wires together and use heat shrink tubing to cove them. Recently I have bought some butt connectors that after you crimp them you use a heat gun on them and it has solder in it to help with the electrical connections and it shrinks the outer tubing to give the wire connection some stability from flexing and breaking at the connector.

those look pretty cool.the sure connect sealing cons are the ones you're talking about?perfect timing btw,I just got done plumbing the fpr and gauge in.the little filter too.i'll probably solder and heatshrink them, but those connectors are worth looking into for the future.they would be great for tight places.I was soldering under the dash the other day and the little under dash light bulb layed on my arm a little too long(it was on and hot!) and when i reacted i stuck the soldering tip on my wrist and got a two inch burn.duh.thanks again.

Yes the sure connect sealing connectors are the ones I'm talking about. I've used them in stereo installations lately and have worked really well and just installed some under the hood of my 86 so I'll see how they hold up there soon.
