idling problems

Im having problems with my 84 camaro, the stock quadrojet went out on me and i could find any one to rebuild it so i went with a 1406 edelbrock on a basicly stock 305. When the rpms get over 2500 it runs great but at idle it sounds like its going to die. Ive looked around on here and other forums and they talked about getting a difront distributor. Would that help or could i ajust the timing on mine? Thanks also this is my first post

Re: idling problems

You need a distributor that has vacuum and mechanical advance built into it. Your stock distributor relies on the computer to advance the timing, but without the input from the original carburetor, the computer can't tell what the engine's doing so it can command the proper timing advance.

Hard to believe you can't find a rebuilt computer q-jet. Readily available on Summit ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ur...maro/year/1984 ), eBay, most parts stores. I'd gladly spend the $400 on a rebuilt q-jet before I downgraded to an Edelbrock and vac/mech distributor.

And $400 is cheap compared to the money and aggravation you'll spend rounding up the parts and dialing in your converted "system". Not to mention the extra fuel you'll be burning compared to the stock CCC setup.

Re: idling problems

Any mechanical, vacuum HEI should work just fine for your application

Spend what you want, here is a cheap one. Basically you will be out $50 to 350 depending on brand name, quality and markup.

Don't forget to also buy a timing light.

Re: idling problems

Allright, I'm most likely going to keep the edlebrock since it was given to me for my birthday, I'll order a new distributor and see how everything goes.
