83 Camaro, putting me through hell..

Ok, wanna say up front...im no kinda mechanic soo im not too smart in the auto motive department.

But here my fukked up situation...bought 1983 camaro (manual trans) that i was told still runs...it had been sittin in a drive way for about a year but i got it, and nothing happened....figured out it was a battery problem so i got a new one to be safe, then comes on the 'choke light' after some searching on the internet i figured out that the light means i need another alternator, 2 weeks later i finally get another alternator thinking i can finally get the car to start up and NOTHING still...wen i first got the car nothing worked no lights, radio, nada, bought a battery and my car would buzz cuz the door is open ill close it try and start it and the only things that work is, the buzzing again, the radio (til i turn the key again to start the engine in which the radio cuts off), and the choke light....after buying another alternator the same things work except, a "fasten seat belt" started workin out of no where and i hear a faint sound that SOUNDS like a horn in the distance wen trying to start my engine......please, for the love of all things fast, can ANY one help me with this??

This is only my 2nd car, and i thought it would be cool to fix it up but this is frustrating when you have no idea wat to do...

Re: 83 Camaro, putting me through hell..

Sounds like a fusible link, down at the starter.

THIMK: electricity has to get from the battery, and into the car, SOMEHOW. That "somehow" is 2 large red wires that connect to batt at the terminal of the starter where the big red batt cable also goes. SOMEHOW those big red wires have to be protected against shorts; and that "somehow" is fusible links. They are short pieces of special wire, selected to act like fuses. About half of the stuff in the car is fed through each one; I can't recall off the top of my head exactly how it's divided, but, it's roughly half of the load through each red wire and its fusible link.

One of yours is blown.

You can get replacement ones at any parts store; even AZ.

Disconnect the neg batt cable; disconnect all the wires at the starter; you might have to take the starter off to get room to work up in there; and R&R the one that's toasted.

Sure. Any parts store.

How much
Around 50" I think.

is it easy to put on?
Iunno... how easy is brain surgery? (hint: are you a brain surgeon? Maybe you are; but I doubt you want ME inside your skull with sharp things)

Not sure why you'd want to do that though. Doesn't sound like you need a cable. Sounds like you need a fusible link. Check that first; worry about "cable" later.
