Performer RPM Air Gap on Firebird With Power Bulge Hood?

The title says it all. Here's the intake I want to run.

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/...r-gap-sb.shtml

I've got a manual transmission, so I'm thinking I'd want to run a Holley or a Demon 650 double pumper.

If it will fit, what air cleaner?

you are going to have to try it, i would get a holley and one of these. the description says fits edelbrock but the shape of the base with clearance for the two holley bowls. you can get any of the drop base 14x3 ones if they have that shape on the base and go from there. you may have to switch to a 14x2 or 14x2.5 element but really hard to tell until you have everything assembled and on the car.

Re: Performer RPM Air Gap on Firebird With Power Bulge Hood?

My setup fits under the stock firebird hood. I wish I could remember who made the air cleaner but I believe it's a 1.625" drop base aluminum one from summit. I have solid motor mounts and a Holley street avenger carb and a 3" air filter. It's a tight fit though even with the hood's inner structure cut out. I have about 1/8" clearance.

Thanks for the response. Any chance of seeing a pic or two of the underside of the hood?

This has been brought up multiple times. I have an Airgap too with a stock Camaro hood. You may run into trouble if your power bulge hood has different structure on the inside. Otherwise the Airgap, Holley, 3" filter, and a drop base air cleaner should work out well. If it is close, new engine mounts may make things tighter.

Firebird and Camaro are completely different animals. The downslope on a Firebird hood is much sharper. What works on your Camaor has nothing to do with what will, or will not work on a Firebird.

And actually, a Firebird with a Power Bulge hood and a Performer RPM Air Gap intake has apparently not been brought up multiple times. If it had, it would have shown up in the multiple searches I did before posting this.

Re: Performer RPM Air Gap on Firebird With Power Bulge Hood?

I understand the differences between Firebird and Camaros, but I have seen Airgaps used in Firebirds in person as well (structure not cut out). It is a very tight fit but I'm not as sure it's from the slope of the hood. FWIW, the air cleaner sits very close to the cowl so that is where you want to compare.
The point I was trying to pass on is if your power bulge hood has additional structure it will probably be an issue. When I said different structure I meant between Firebird hoods not Camaro vs Firebirds. Sorry, I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

If the underlying structure is similar to a stock Firebird hood and you already have whatever mounts you are going to use, then as mentioned you are just going to have to try it. There are variances between individual cars as well. On mine I found out at the last minute that I had to run a spacer because the Holley interfered with the vacuum port in the back. I cut mine out actually and can try to find the pic if you want to see the location of the air cleaner to the hood is. I had the exact same manifold (7501).

I know I've seen threads on the power bulge hood especially when the Airgap came out. I know too that the search engine here doesn't always work the best.

It fits. Ran mine for a couple years with a 2 inch filter. Now trying to figure out how to make it work with the carb spacer I just put on.

It probably fits just having that bracing cut out. Depending on how big of a filter you want to run.

Wow, that's a lot of structure cut out. Thanks for posting the pic.

Notice any difference with the hood's stability?

That's a really clean, well-detailed engine bay.

Did you have to cut the hood structure?
