CarburetorsCarb discussion and questions. Upgrading your Third Gen's carburetor, swapping TBI to carburetor, or TPI to carburetor? Need LG4 or H.O. info? Post it here.
I'm by no means am expert when it comes to these electric carbs, or carbs in general, but I know the basics. I have an 85 Camaro with a 305/Rochester e4me quadrajet setup. Completely stock. I'm getting fuel pumped up to the carb, but the carb isn't spraying anything into the engine. When you spray a little gas directly into the choke plate it will run, but when you manually pump the throttle and look into the carb, no gas at all is coming out. I ordered a rebuild kit from Mike's carburetors and got a book off of Amazon. I replaced the internal filter, the accelerator pump rubber, the needle and seat (which it needed badly. The old needle had no point at all to it). I also sprayed all the junk out of it (although it was pretty clean) and gave it a good spray down with carb cleaner. I also went ahead and replaced the TPS. When I was putting the thing back together I made sure the MCS screw was in the same spot (which was a little less than 4 full turns). I threw it in the car, the solenoid was clicking like it should, and I felt confident. Went to start the engine and nothing happened. Same thing. No fuel. So long story short I have no fuel getting to the engine. I have no idea what went wrong, but you guys seem to be experts in this field. Maybe I missed something when I was reassembling it? I'm going insane. Any and all help is appreciated. I don't really want to get another carb unless I absolutely have to.
Is the new fuel filter installed correctly, and is the spring there?
I think so. The spring is in there and it only goes in one way from what I remember, but I can double check later. If that's the problem then I'm the dumbest person on here lol
Have you checked the lever that pushes down the acc. pump?
Sometimes the pressed in metal "button" gets loose and the pump arm slides down the side of the
acc. pump shaft insted of pushing it down so no acc. pump spray or action.
There is a thread and pics here somewhere about another member having the same issue.
Is the new fuel filter installed correctly, and is the spring there?
Okay yeah I'm an idiot. I must have got the wrong filter for my model of carb or something because I took it out and she fired right up. I have an external aftermarket one for now but yeah now it starts. Thanks for that suggestion, I didn't even think of that. The only thing is it idles at about 2000 and won't kick down. Do you guys think that's because of the high idle screw under the choke? I wasn't sure how many turns to install it because I forgot to count when I took it out. It has an electric choke if that helps clear anything up. Thanks for the help
When cold, the rpm should be about 2000, but you have to tap the pedal as the choke coil warms up to bring the idle down.
If it won't kick down, then the coil is bad, or the linkage is sticking or you assembled something wrong during the rebuild. Test the coil second. First make sure that there is +12v at the wire.
