The exhaust will help, but can also have a negative effect on the economy side.
The basics are: 1) Engine in good tune (ignition fresh, timing set properly) - upgraded coil and module may also help; 2) Properly adjusted choke and clean air filter element; 3) An egg between your right foot and the accelerator - I've seen as much as 4 mpg difference between tankfuls when I did "on-ramp test runs" and when I don't. Keeping the secondaries closed will make a huge difference.
The beauty of the CC carb closed-loop system is that it sips as little gas as possible for the conditions at any given time. Keeping it in good shape is one of the best things you can do for economy.
Beyond that, synthetic lubricants (engine oil, tranny fluid, gear lube), and keeping the tires properly inflated will help both power and economy. Head work (port clean-up, chamber polishing) to improve fuel/air mixing and flow will improve power, but not so much economy (especially from a cost/benefit perspective). A cam change will definately improve the power side, but economy - probably not.
