I still want to know where math was made up? That is your claim not mine. The numbers I stated were actual dyno results swapping the same setup from TBI to Vortec heads.

A much lighter Mustang with 157hp would probably smoke a 170hp LG4. I watched too many 215 hp LX Mustangs make short work of 245 HP L98 Camaros and Vettes alike back in the day as bad as I hate to admit it.

The LU5 actually had the GM 929 camshaft not the L83 camshaft. Straight from the GM Heritage build specs on the LU5. The same cam came in all the base 70s 350s and the TBI 350 trucks.

AFAIK, the LM1 cam, ('70's 350) was the same as the L83 cam. I might be wrong.

Could be. But it would stand a better chance than either an LU5 TH200 or a 4 speed 145 hp LG4.
I had an '82 GT for a while. I don't think it would have walked away from my '87 Formula - or visa versa.

Different cam. The L83 used 14044613 which is 202/207 @ 0.050. I doubt thate there is 10 hp difference between that cam and the 194/203 @ 0.050 the LM1/LS9 used.

I had an 87 Formula. Auto LG4. Ran 15.8s when it was stock. A tick faster than my 89 L03 car @16.16 stock. Both blistering fast around 84 mph trap speed

Im sure it is much stronger having the manual transmission. Ive got to get a manual thirdgen or C4 its been on my to do list awhile!. You also have the bigger exhaust on it also right? With the HO or L98 exhaust Im sure it would make a great deal of improvement.

No, I wish.The factory I-pipe was split from front to back when I got it. I thought it would be no problem to have a 2.75"-3" pipe fabbed like they did in the old days. No luck. My exhaust guy suggested I get a 2.5" Dynomax. Out of stock. In fact, anything over 2.25" was out of stock for everyone I checked. Another exhaust shop fabbed a 2.25" I pipe. They said that they didn't have anything bigger. So I reluctantly did that.

Just for reference I believe DynoDon still builds his Y-pipe.

I believe Don's Y-pipe requires the HO 2.25" exhaust manifolds as the exhaust ports are in a slightly different position than the 2" manifolds. I did see that Don is selling his 3" I-pipe through TDS now. I was looking for a quick solution. I may re-do the exhaust in the future, however.

My Y-pipe only fits my headers, not any manifolds.

Haha... oh man. I had a 1982 Pontiac TransAm that had an LG4, and man... let me tell you. I think it had 245 ft-lbs of torque, which was nice... but I seem to recall it had like 145hp and was a total pig. The car was awesome, and it was a fairly agile car (loved that car)... but geeze, that engine was garbage.
I'd imagine a newer 1987 LG4 would probably (as you point out) have all the post-1986 small block improvements, and would be a solid block for swapping in a good cam and even some mild head work.
Honestly though, if I had a 3rd gen still, and it had an SBC... I'd probably just buy a crate motor and mod the hell out of it while making it look as stock as possible. I'd probably just go with... what was it? the ZZ4 crate? Basic ~300hp 350sbc. Give the car the engine it should have had...

The only difference is it was a 1 piece rear seal, machined for roller rockers, block.it was the same 350 that came in the c/k trucks, and had thin wall casting 'tbi heads'. A.K.A. gms attempt at swirl port... which was a cast on ramp that BLOCKED HALF OF THE PORTÀ
the 85/86 was the interesting one, that motor (esp the TPI) was an gen I motor with the new style tpi intake. The only years where you could swap for actual performance heads and keep the intake.
you can litterslly take an 87 motor, pull toming chain to install vortec crank trigger, bolt on all vortec stuff including the heads and pop it lovingly back into a c/k..
This I know as factual.
Other than the block, ?,(for the 1 piece seal, and the machining for roller lifters) it was paper weight.

My thoughts on any 3rd gen 305…It served a purpose in its time but that time was long ago….like Ronald Reagan long ago. Those of us lucky enough to
own these cars unfortunately inherited some really awful, by todays standards, engine setups. But what are you gonna do when Uncle Sam has his foot on your neck screaming fuel economy? Oh yeah you make a really cool car that can be fixed later in life…like 6 presidents later.
