Really High Cold Idle

My Q-Jet is basically stock, built was rebuilt partially over the summer (had to replace accell pump) anyways. I live in Mass and its been real cold of late so when i start her up the idle climbs to about 2000 rpms and sits there for a while. Now i know i have to let her warm up, but should it be idling this high? I am worried about the motor being under load like that with cold oil, i use castrol GTX. That and the fact that i dislike putting my car into gear at that rpm. Also sometimes she just cuts out and stalls when i'm driving, after warmup, only usually happens once, do i have a problem with the choke pull-off? Any help is appreciated.

That sounds a little high. I forget what the sticker says, but that's about what it should be on the highest cam step when warm. Try adjusting it down a bit.

The pull-off should be adjusted so it opens the butterfly to a specified value (don't have that in front of me), and so that the cam is dropped to the next step down from the highest. With those adjusted properly, it shouldn't idle too high (tap the throttle after it starts to bring the idle down that 1st step), and shouldn't stall.

I have 2 85 TAs 1 auto and 1 stick. Both will idle around 2000 on highest step when it is cold.

Same here. My '87 LG4 idles near 2000 on the highest step when its' first been started. I let it run @2000 for a minute or so then give it a little gas, which knocks it to about 1500, and then start driving. I use castrol GTX as well. I've had no problems. 95,000 miles and it still runs fine.
