Computer Controlled Carb on 84 S/E?

Hey all,
I am kind of new to this scene, so bear with me. I have an '84 firebird S/E V-6 that has what appears to be a Computer controlled carb on it. Is that correct or are the wires plugging into the carb for another purpose? The other question is will a non-computer controlled carb work from an S-10 with a 2.8? They appear to have the same bolt pattern and throttle linkage , but are slightly different from each other. ANy help on this subject at all would be useful.

Thanks,
Chris Payne

I don't know about the S10, but can speak from a little knowledge of the original V6 in my '82, and understanding V8 CC carbs.

IF the S10 is in fact non-CC, then you will also need a non-CC distributor. You'll probably lose TCC lockup function if you have an auto tranny. SES light will stay on. I don't think there will be any linkage problems.

Again, if it is like my '82, there is a ceramic heater between the carb and intake that has a pair of wires going to it. The intent is to help vaporize the fuel when the engine is cold. Mine was burnt to a crisp; I understand that was a common problem - but easily fixed/replaced. I don't know if that will still work w/non-CC setup.

Also, no flame intended, just info: 6 hours, 35 minutes isn't all that long to wait for a response on this board. Some questions take a day or more for 1st reply. Patience will be rewarded. Believe me, we're much more willing to bear with you than bare with you...

A lot of people work during the day and cannot reply till they get home. I have internet access and work but it is strictly for business use only. Keep that in mind next time.

Hey all,
Der Ubermechanic is at it again..... I went from an electronically controlled
carb and distributor to a Non-cc carb and dist and finally got it all put
back together. I never removed the plug wires so I'm pretty sure the firing
order didn't change. I am also sure that the carb is getting gas because
I forgot to properly tighten the fuel line and it shot gas all over the
engine compartment. There were two wires coming out of the distributor,
an orange and a black one and I connected those to where the orange and
black wire came off of the old distributor. The engine just cranks and
cranks but never fires. Any insight as to what it might be?

TIA,
Chris Payne

At this point, who knows, are you sure you are getting spark? How about the plugs, you might want to check them out. More than once i've seen plugs get so fouled from one problem or another that they just will not fire. And since you've just swapped distributors, are you sure you have the timing close.

I have no idea if the timing is close, I lined the rotor up almost exactly where I took it off, but I had to rotate the new vacuum distributor about 60 degrees counterclockwise because of clearance issues with my intake manifold. I think the best thing I can do from here would be to check the spark and if no spark, take it to my mechanic.

THanks much guys,

Chris

I've got spark and I've tried to set the timing correctly, but it's never even close to firing. I'm just saying screw it and I'm taking it to my mechanic.
