carburetor problems please help

I have a 84 camaro that i put a 350 in and a carter 625 carburetor. The problem is ever since i put the carb on the car does not want to start at first. When you let it sit over night for example and you go out to start it back up then it wont start. You have to pour some gas in the carb and then you can get it to crank but then it will run for a few seconds and cut off unless you keep giving it the gas. It acts like it burns up what you put in and it won suck any more through the line. But when you detach the fuel line at the carb it is getting fuel it gushes out. If you keep giving it throttle after it fires up it will keep running then after a couple minutes of mashing the throttle to keep it going it will sit and idle by itself also if you cut it off after it reaches this point it will fire right back up. I dont understand what the problem is my friend works on holleys but he doesnt know anything about carters or edelbrocks.I could really use some help. i dont want to have to carry a can of gas everywhere i go so i can start the car back up .thanks

Sounds to me like you do not have the choke set correctly.

had the same problem "after" i rebuilt my old 625 carter. there is a weighted needle type valve up btween the primary boosters(i think that is what they are called. it's the little squirter that pumps fuel at the top of the primary venturies). well in the rebuild kit it came with a different kind of needle....the stock one was pretty small and had a spring to act like a check ball so to speak....the one that came with the kit was larger and used gravity with no spring...well i didn't pay close enough attention and put the large needle in WITH the spring and it would not start unless you dumped gas in the carb. might want to check that out.

Fast3rdGen- I see in your sig that your running 40 flowmasters, as in 2 mufflers? I thought this wasn't possible in an fbody because of ground clearance issue's, if it is, fill me in

yes i got 2 40 series flowmasters. i use hooker supercomp long tubes...a set of 2.5" hedman collector extensions that are about 15" long with an "s" bend to clear the crossmember, another 18" of pipe and i raised the floor under the rear seats and tucked the mufflers there. ground clearance isn't bad. just gotta be careful with driveways.
