Defrost Idle Pickup??

I own an 84 TA 4bbl HO. I know that there is a pin on the carb, by the throttle, which comes out when you put the defrost on. I know this pin is an idle pick up for the defrost. What I am wondering is, is it supposed to make the car run at 1100rpm in gear?? I know it holds the throttle up some, but is this too much? It's not a real concern to me, since I know all I have to do is turn the defrost off and the pin retracts, but I'm just curious about why it does this. I use it as a crude cruse control... lol. Thanks for any replies.
PS I did have the carb rebuilt (for other reasons), and it done it before and after I had this done.

Anytime the AC compressor is running, the idle is increased to compensate for the AC pulling the idle down. It should not be that high in gear. It should only compensate for the AC compressor running(the idle should be about the same or a little higher). You should be able to adjust it.

My AC compressor is gone (the AC needed charged, and I never use it anyway, so less weight and one less pully eating up HP)... should it still happen when the defrost is on? Then again, the defrost is cooled by the AC... right? How can I adjust it? Thanks. BTW... it did this when the AC compressor was still in, so I don't think it's due to the compressor being removed.

The AC dehumidifies the defroster flow.

The idle speed is adjusted with the AC running, so the load that was on the engine with the AC present is no longer there.

With the engine warmed up, turn on the AC or defrost with the tranny in gear (if auto), and adjust the pin (as you called it) that comes out of that solenoid. Notice it has a hex-shaped head - that's so it can be adjusted. Adjust it to the value given on your under-hood tuning sticker, if it's still there. The idle speed should be around 650 w/AC, but without you don't really need the faster speed, so set it to your non-AC idle speed.

I'd say disconnect the wire from the solenoid, but I believe the ECM also uses it in de-acceleration situations.

I was told NEVER to adjust the "pin" while it was energized. Disconnect the wire to the solinode(sp) before adjusting. After you have turned it in a few turns reconnect the wire and use the gas linkage to rev the engine up so that the "pin" can be properly extended. Repeat until you are satisfied. Also you can just remove the wire if you do not have the AC working.
