I've used them for 16+ years in all kinds of applications.
If you want serious performance out of them you will need to do a few mods, however.

Grandma's old 78 Malibu (33K miles!) with a fresh 383, tweaked QJet 4bbl, decent heads and a mild cam. No runs yet- motor installed as of 2/11/01. Nitrous to be installed soon.
