1988 convertible deck limit switch

The switch for the tonneau cover is located on the console. Switch does not actuate the solenoids to open cover. GM had a service bulletin about a deck limit switch that must be actuated for the switch to work. Any ideas on where the switch is located? The switch on the console is good and the solenoids check good. Any pictures or answers would be appreciated

I'm not familiar with such a switch. They may be referring to the striker-sensing switch which is the small black switch on the hatch pull-down unit next to the latch.

It is located in the center rear of the end panel. To operate, parking brake must be applied (MANUAL) and release switch held. For automatics, gear must be in "P" or "N" and release switch held.

Hello Zooker,

Welcome to the board. The end panel would be the trim panel going across the back of the trunk or cargo area. The release relay is in the center console behind the shifter assembly. The in-line fuse you have heard talk about is on the t/a, firebird, & gta's. It takes the place of the "lid" fuse in camaro's and is located in the wire bundle at the fuse panel, sometimes a pain to find. It is a red/white wire with the in-line fuse in it.

The switch you are looking for is in the trunk. It is a part of the trunk closer mechanism. If you remove the trim panel at the back of the trunk and look at the trunk lid closer toward the bottom on the left side you should see where a wire should be plugged in. Probably a loose connection, but it could be that the switch is bad or needs adjustment (positioning). I would check the connection. If that did not help you might short the two wires together with a piece of wire - this would simulate the closed position on the switch. If the Solenoids fire then the problem is with the limiting switch and not just a loose connection

Good Luck!

thank to all who helped

removed the end panel and sure as heck the connector had come undone from the deck switch. Plugged it back in and it works fine. Thanks again for all your help.

Zooker,

Isn't is sweet when it works!

When I got my car the switch did not work. I was having to raise the back of the top and while holding it up climb in and lean the seat forward so I could get to the loops and pull them both at the same time so the tonneau would clear.

When I found the loose wire and electrically popped the tonneau the first time it was almost as good as good as it gets!

Happy (topless) Trails!

Speedy
