Only 91-92 got the factory convertible digit in the VIN. All others were dealer ordered cars sent to ASC after the fact and the vin's are the standard coupe vin's.

Sounds about right... I've seen 89 GTAs, the 350 variety of limited prod mine falls into (EDIT> 1 in 50 appears to be mostly GTAs). If I turn out to have my facts mixed up, I haven't heard officially... I had asked for major magazines to explore ASC conversions, like Car Craft and HHP, never got a word back
hmmmmm
Checking the # against mine it preceded mine as well in production sequence. hehe Same early vert spoiler, nice spot!
The one below is in my city... not quite sure on the year though, only spotted it everyday at the store

There were three 1989 TTAs converted to droptops; one was done for Jeff Beitzel, who was head of PAS at that time. The other two cars were sold through dealers:
'89 TTA Convertible Article
The "50" figure is bandied about a lot, but according to what information I have seen.... the "50" is the number of cars converted that had the 5.7L TPI engine. GTAs could also be built with the 5.0L too, so it is possible that some 5.0L cars could have been converted as well. I have the VINs of the cars converted, but there is really no way to trace them down.
Therefore, it's not really feasible to claim only 50 GTAs were converted in '89, as there were obviously some Formulas done and likely some Trans Ams as well. Sure, the GTAs are rare, but there's no way to verify only 50 of them....

About the '89 Turbo T/A convert. A guy by the name of Rick from Carmotorsports.com here in Kennesaw,Ga. owns it. He (or his company) also owns a black T/A that was used for preproduction testing on the turbo motor before it was released for productin. They had both cars at a show our club (Atlantacfa.com) hosted last year. Chris

Re: 89 5.7 gta vert
That picture of the red 89 GTA with the black top is my old car. I bought it in Arizona. It originally had a tan top and tan leather. The current owner who I sold the car to changed the top to black and the interior to black. It's an original 350 car. It sported a 89 TTA drivetrain for awhile. As far as I know it's back to a 350 (non original engine now) and he's repainting it. Car has a very clean rust free body...
and that's the original paint in that picture.

BTW,
There was waaay more than just 50 L98 Firebird Convertibles,
There was at least 142 GTA or Trans Am's and 42 Formula 350's I have record of confirmed 30 GTA's and 2 Trans Am's and 13 Formula 350's...
On a side note I also have record of 4 IROC Z's with the 350 in 1987 that were converted from T-top to Convertible.
