Rear speaker mounting...

So i take the panels off the other day to swap out some bad speakers and found how half assed they did these at the factory, what have some of you guys done to re-mount your speakers, id like to try and keep a speaker grill on there, but that half circle crap has to go..... I dont mind cutting the panel, but id like to keep it looking stock as best i can, im using 5 1/2's i think that was factory ?

My factory speakers were 6x9s. I put a set of Ecplise 6.5" coaxial speakers in their place. I had to remove the "padding" on the armrest part of the panel though, to get the speaker to fit though. I used a jigsaw to enlarge the hole from the factory speakers just enough to fit the 6.5" in its place. I'll get a few pics after I get my panels back from the upholstery shop.

In a coupe or T-top, yes, but not in a convertible. 6x9's have too great a depth to mount behind the flush factory grilles. Musta been changed out somewhere along the way.

Well, whoever replaced them then is an idiot, because they were Delco brand 6x9s.

I agree, 6x9's don't fit in a convertible. The PO did that and used 3" drywall screws to "somehow" hold them in place. Nasty.
I believe the factory size is 6-1/2" round.

I'm using round coaxial JBLs, the dash are a bit louder, so fader favors the rear. Either way, JBLs seem to excell in a clean, clear high treble, vs bass, but I prefer a clean bass and most car examples with bass boxes, etc, don't impress me in the least. I am hoping for a 5.1 surround type of system at a future point of time. I'd heard of room being carved in the center dash for speaker placement, however, I'm not set on that idea yet.
