GTA taillights... no problem, right?

I am converting my taillights from these:

To the ones in the attached image below...

I won't have any problems with fitment will I? I already know about the wiring harness.

Thanks for the help,

Youll need a different harness I think .I know the ones you want to install have 4 sockets for each taillight and the ones you have now have 6 sockets on each taillight.Hope that helps

On second thought I think I will focus on performance improvments like the rear differential, disk brakes, and an aluminum DS.

The feedback I am gegtting indicates the car looks fine with the original lights. If I could locate some '91-'92 lights however, that would be different.

Hi Cadillac,
I converted our 1991 Firebird with the Sport Appearance Package (car just like yours, but a hardtop), to the 1985-1990 GTA/Trans Am taillights. I think they look even better!
All I did, was go to the junkyard, and clip off both reverse light pigtails off a '85-'90 Trans Am, and clip them onto the end sockets of your car, bagging all the unused pigtails (the end pigtail, as well as the two small bulb pigtails, on both sides) in plastic baggies, and just stuffing them under the bumper cover.
The turnsignal only works on the two far end lights, but to me, it looks great, and we have had lots of people say they like it.
If you use your stock end pigtails, it will push out the ends of your taillights, not fitting right.

Hope this helps you,

George

Hey there George!

I'm a little confused. Did you use the earlier model GTA taillights (pictured in the attachement above) to do that? With my car I consciously made a decision (with a lot of feedback) to keep the current lights. However, if I could find a set of the '91-'92 light for a decent price I would make the conversion. They look like this:

The lights I almost bought from Dave were the earlier kind. For the money, I didn't think they were going to cosmetically improve the car as much as say, an aluminum driveshaft or a new differential with better gears and disks would be for performance.

You got any before and after pics of what you did? I am currently carrying a credit with Dave at TGUSA. and like the idea of making another purchase with him.

As it stands now, I think I want to focus on replacing the center piece of the lights. If I can find a center piece with the gold bird, I will snap it and keep the current lights with amber.

Hi Cadillac!
My girlfriend's car had the lights like in your first picture.
We (I) put in the '85-'90 GTA/Trans Am taillights, including the GTA style gold bird center.
I will have to get some pics, so I can show you.
Give me some time, as it's late already, and she goes to work first thing in the morning.
I too, would love the '91-'92 GTA/Trans Am taillights, but they cost big $$$$! I do have a set, but they have cracks in them.
I keep looking for a good set.

George

I get it... that was the conversion I was originally considering. Now I know who my competition is for the GTA lights. You and every other 3rd Gen Firebird owner.

Competition?
Ha!
Just cause I have one set installed on my girlfriend's car?
Or because I have 3 extra sets sitting in my storage shed?
I guess I do tend to stock these parts!
This is what happens when you have a 20th TTA, you gotta start having spare stuff for the car!

Well,
Let me think about it.
Since the center section is really hard to get, I'm not sure I want to part with any yet.

Sorry,

George

Wait a minute. The lights I want are two piece, I think. I'm so easily confused in my old age.

Are we talking about the same thing?

Cadillac,
The ones I am talking about, are shown in the bottom picture, at the top of the tread, only with the correct center section.
If you are talking 2 peice, those are 1991-1992 Trans Am/GTA style.
I am talking about the 1985-1990 Trans Am/GTA style 3 peice.

Hope this helps,

George

Also, the rear shot of the red car directly above, has the Firebird center section, not the original Trans Am/GTA like the second pic in the top of the tread.

Hope this clarifies better,

George

Yep... I'm clear.

Sorry for the confusion. My goal at this point is to wait for an opportunity to get a pair of the 2 piece lights. That will be hard and I expect expensive.

Nice mock up Travis!

I still think it is an upgrade from what I've got... there's no question. However, I think I would be better served with putting the money into performance mods. I've got an aluminum DS on the way and a chunk of credit sitting over at ThirdGenUSA. I'm thinking dual fans next or maybe something else. You already know about the axle/diff/brakes I want.

91-92 GTA lights are the best.
