Tonneau safety lock-out not working

Car: '88 IROC Convertible
Engine: ZZ4 TPI
Transmission: 5 spd.
Tonneau safety lock-out not working
Normally the tonneau release button will not work when the car is in drive, right?
I've just completed swapping out my 305 for a ZZ4 and the 4 speed auto for a T5 manual.
Now I can release the tonneau hatch whenever I want, this kinda' concerns me safety wise.
Has anybody out there come across this before and how did you remedy the situation?
