Does you convertible do this?? Fuel related!

Hi, ever since I installed my edlebrock 3 inch cat back I had some fuel smell coming from the back. I found out what it was, and it mainly getting the tank to hot and the fuel might be boiling. So, I can cope with that, and I have a remedy to that with some header wrap. However, I've been noticing that my tank vents through that vent next to the tank once I shut the car off. I can hear it go shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and it would went it out and stop. Than I can smell fuel smell. I know that once it vents there will be fuel smell, but is it normal??? I think thats where it vents when I drive too, cuz sometimes I'll smell it and it goes away. I was just wondering if any of the late verts 92's in particular do this, or have you ever heard anything like this??
I really don't want to take the tank out and figure out if there is a bigger problem, but I know that my edlebrock mufflers are heating up the tank too much.

Oh, anything that you can suggest that I should do to my muffler, so that I can stop the heat, would be appreciated. Thanks.

the smell out the back is unburnt fuel which is being exhausted from the pipes.

if you were to run no cat it'd be even worse.

No it doesnt necessarily mean you're running rich. Not all fuel gets burnt up in the exhaust cycle, some goes down and tthrew the cat and out. Hence white smoke mornings etc. It just means your running a bit rich OR your cat isnt doing the job it's supposed to.
----------
oh, you're also probably running a bit rich since you threw the 3inch catback on. your computer isn't reading the extra flow your exhaust has now.

It smells like there might be a leak, I called couple of dealers and they ran my vin and said that there is not a single recall. However, I am putting in a different rear end in couple of weeks, so I will check the tank out.

Do any of you guys have a gas smell with your verts??? Just need to know if this is something with 92 cars, or just my car/luck.

I have a late '92 vert and my V.I.N. had an open gas tank recall attached to it( and I collected on it). Aside from that, I have the 3" Edelbrock cat back system and have none of the gas fumes problems you are describing.Sorry...

I had a problem with the fuel pump *in the tank* of my car. Basically, even when the car was off the pump would keep running and I smelled the gas kinda like you describe.

If you hear a humming sound from the rear of the car after you turn off the car it will be that problem.

Long shot.

I have an 88 and with the charcoal canister and crap like that I thought that the fuel system is totally sealed. When I take my gas cap off sometimes I can hear air rushing in and the tank makes a pop sound like it expanded.
Anyone have that happen or is mine screwed too.

Air hissing is normal. All my cars that I owned did that. However, an abnormal amount of hissing might be a problem. I think you have nothing to worry about.

Well, I bought a fire extinguisher for flamable liquids and electrical shorts and mounted it on the hump between the two rear seats. I call it cheap inssurance. Whoever mentioned the Fuel Pump might be onto something. Since my car after a long drive and a hard drive, will have the pump whining and making noises.
I looked around my tank but could not find anything leaking. There are no leaks on the ground either. Also, the smell seems to be coming from the very front of the rear tire where the filter and the vent is. So, I am thinking that either the pump is not functioning right (highly possible) or the seal for the pump on top of the tank is bad.
I will be addressing these problems after the holidays, since I wont have any money up untill than . If anybody else has these problems chime in and let us know. There might be something going on with these 92 verts>!?!?!

My friends 89 IROC has the same problems. 70% of the time when he shuts it down you can smell gas fumes eminating from the LR wheel well area. It blows itself away(the gas smell) in a few minutes after sitting. Never a problem if it's running, just upon shut down.

My 92 vert has a gas smell sometimes also. Even after different motor/tranny exhaust swap, still the same smell. Doesn't look wet around filter or anywhere else that I can find.

1) Does your car still have the heat shield between the exhaust and the tank?

Its should still be there and should be adequate from overheating the fuel.

2) THe hiss & pop sound somoene mentioned MAY actually be the tank expanding. As I had a friend with a plastic tank that would colapse. What was happening is as the fuel pump would pump out the gas, no air was allowed back in the canister was plugged and the tank would slowly colapse, he would unscrew his filler cap and it would pop back he could drive a while until the bottom of the tank would push against the pump, shutting it off.

My dad had the problem with the gas smell in the 88 Iroc vert. and now with the 89 iroc. Our problem was the filler neck was cracked. We just dropped the tank and epoxied it. I'm not sure what we used. I can ask him later today. We actually have to drop the tank in the 89 this weekend to fix it when we have time.

Not really sure if this is a real probelm BUt I was talkign to a guy who claimed that when his fuel pump was going out he could smell gas. I am not sure why since it should be a sealed system. The only thing I could think of is there was a problem with his gas tank vent.
