GM stock convertible subframe connectors??

I ran into a guy that had a ttop car and SFC, when I asked him what brand they are he said he went to a GM dealer and ordered them for a same year convertible Camaro. My question to the vert board surfers is (yes I searched) are the GM SFC out there and will they stiffen up a har top car??

Thanks ahead of time.

I dont know that they are/were available separately from GM but even if they are I wouldnt bother. Just get some aftermarket ones from Spohn, UMI, Alston, whatever.

GM didn't have SFCs to my knowledge. Only thing that ASC did was to box the rocker area in.

UMI, Spohn, etc, run $200, so save yourself $150, and build your own for $50 max.

I'm tired of seeing aftermarket companies charge WAY more than the material costs. Hell, research costs are almost nil now. Easy to buy a set, copy them, tweak them as "your" design, and bingo, your done.

Re: GM stock convertible subframe connectors??

Since all 3rd gens began life as a T-top cars and ASC mounted the SFC to the bottom and chopped the top off, and GM had to sell parts, I do not see why GM would not sell them over the counter...

Re: GM stock convertible subframe connectors??

if they did sell them, it would require people to chop their front fenders like they did on the verts. its a pain in the butt swapping fenders, having to cut and weld them.

What was different about the front fenders? I thought only the rears were cut?

Wheres a good place to get a "design" to tweak? I have thought about this myself and was a bit leary on it, I custom fabbed a trans crossmember for a th350/400 trans with torque arm mount, so SFC are something I would do to. I just want a pair I can copy

And what does everyone suggest, tubular or box steel???

their is about 6 inches or so removed from the fenders to fit the frame rails. and a special bracket bolts the fender to the body cause the orig mounting holes are gone.

I'll go square, just because I'd rather stitch weld the whole length, rather than just the ends.

Re: GM stock convertible subframe connectors??

I just put a new fender on my car. It was approx 3.75" cut off. It was right underneith one of the push in tabs for the plastic fender liner. I had to fab up 2 brackets to hold the bottom of the fender in place.

Re: GM stock convertible subframe connectors??

Convertibles had a rocker box and alos had reinforcments on the inside running from the cowl, along the rocker, and back to the B pillar. Sure you could probably get them from GM a while ago, but now that is highly unlikely.
