My new 91 RS Convertible
I just acquired this 91 RS Vert from another member on this site. I think i got a hell of a deal. I paid 700 for it complete with 17"zr1 rims, 4th gen rear end with 3.73 gears, eighbac pro springs, tbi strut brace, k&n open element, summit alluminum radiator, the body is in great shape minus passenger fender, interior is in great shape but the top is crap. Engine is blown but I already have a replacement. Here is my dilema I also have an 85 z28 hard top that I will start parting out. Will the passenger fender from the hard top fit the vert? also the vert is auto and my z28 is 5spd should i convert this car to a 5spd manual instead of staying auto? if i do I already have someone lined up to buy the auto transmission i just don't know what i should do. What do you guys think? I am in great need of guidance

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
Fenders are different.
You can cut the other fender and reuse the 'vert brace and cut the slots for the GFX.

Umm, dude..... If you don't do the 5-speed swap, you're gonna repeatedly kick yourself in the *** later.
You've got every motherfreakin thing there.... and you're already pullin the motor.
Do it, do it... Do it now.

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
thanx man thats what i wanted to here
also i've been searching on the t5 swap and can't really find much info. I know my tranny will bolt right up but i'm assuming i'd have to drill to get the clutch mounted. What else would i need to modify and what about the TBI computer do i need to change anything?

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
my original plan was to take the rear end, all the brakes, suspension and rims and part out the vert. I would've done it but the other day i took the top down and fell in love with it lol so now i'm parting out my 85 z28

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
just use everything from the 85.
When you are ready to pull the engine and trans. out, just disconnect the harness from the car and leave everything attached to the engine and tranny.
By the way,VERY good deal you got!
Good luck with it and keep us posted on the progress!

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
Just make templates for the shifter hole and clutch master cylinder hole from the 85. You've got everything there to make a factory like install.
As far as the computer goes, are you gonna keep the TBI????? If so, start off with a manual trans eprom. If you're swapping in a 350 or bigger, search the DIY prom and TBI boards for what all that entails.
I'm not familiar with TBI, but I would imagine all you would need is L05 injectors, knock sensor and eprom (from a manual truck).

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
Yes i plan on keeping the TBI for now and may later go TPI. The car currently has a 350 and has a hypertech chip that it passed smog with on that 350 but the engine has since blown up lol. I got a hold of a 305 for 50 dollars so i may go that route unless i take my 350 in my 85 and see what i can do to make that kind of street legal. If i use my engine is tehre any way that the vortec heads would make me fail smog?

grille, hood, fog lights, emblems, blacked out headlight surrounds. Thats about it really but it make a big difference.

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
I've been a little lazy so here's an update lol
I swapped in another 305 from a 91 RS i got for cheap. I'm going to have to use the stock radiator instead of my griffin because my griffin doesn't have where to plug in the heater hose. 5spd pedal assembly is in, holes are cut in the console for the shifter. I just need to install the flywheel, clutch, and trans then i need to put the plug wires and work on getting it started. Its taken a long time because i've been lazy lol but it shouldn't be much longer

^^^ Thanx I appreciate the support. Unfortunately I went out this weekend and neglected to work on the car so it will still be some time before it hits the road.

Re: My new 91 RS Convertible
Wow almost a year and I finally got it started lol. Damn I took lazyness to a whole nother level. The car finally started yesterday. 5spd swap is complete minus putting oil in trans. But the car is running extremely rich. way too rich so now i have to dig in and try and sort out these issues.

awesome score for that price. I just picked up a 92 vert for $450 no motor or rear spoiler. No big deal 383LT1 is going in it. and my 92z wing.
