spare cover remake

The spare cover is absent from my 89 RS vert. Got one from a coupe but it is too long. Since I do not have the old one and there are none in the area that have the plastic covers, is there a diagram somewhere that will tell a person where and how the cover is too be cut. I know I can cut and recut but a mistake is a mistake and there just are not that many around.

Did you post a want ad in the classifieds section? I'm sure someone is parting one out that would be more than willing to sell you the cover!

Re: spare cover remake

If I was in a pinch, this is what I would do... Ultimately it will be determined by your experience and your skills...

I want to think that both sides of mine are more or less trimmed the same. So if you have the Left side, remove it, and make a cardboard template., take some measurements and then put your template on the part you want to cut. make it longer than what you measure at first and then start sneaking up on it.

I would NOT use a reciprocating saw like a jig saw, or scroll saw, it may seem to be the easy way, but the reciprocating action may cause the plastic to crack, and you do not want that... Ideally you want to use something like a Band saw, or a hand saw (like a coping saw) The coping saw may be really ideal as it should cut reasonably quick... Once done, take a file and clean up your edge. If you use a coping saw, you may have to cut out sections as you go to clear the frame of the saw...

Dremels work great for plastic. Good for control and detail too.

Re: spare cover remake

I just found a set of pictures on the forum of someones open trunk showing the spare, jack and the cover that I'm trying to make. It may be just the thing I've been seeking. Going to go sharpen the Dremel.......Thanks all....
