Trouble with top, won't go down!

I've been trying to get this top down for the past hour. I think the glass window is too big. I just bought this car and this my first attempt to get the top to go down. Any videos, pics out there? What tops work best? I'm probably going to need a new top. Average cost installed?
Thanks for any input

well if your going to put a new top on it, you should get a plastic window. With your car being blue, I would go with a white top. As for the issues of getting your top to go down try laying your back seats down first.

Make sure you fold down the front bow while trying to lay it flat.

Holy ****! thats to expensive..... I would definetly try installing the top myself before I even thought about having it professionally done for that rediculously price. If it were me I would get a plastic back window....you dont have to worry about it shattering

I dont know how a top "installed wrong" is going to cause your problems, and at $1257 to replace it...... sounds like a $1257 snow job to me.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

You say it has a glass window currently? So are you folding the rear seats down prior to attempting to put the top down? That could be your problem there. The glass window tops are awesome, a much better choice than plastic in my opinion. You just have to put the seats down WHILE you're moving the top up or down or it will put the glass in a bind.

yes, I put the seats down. I can get the window to lay flat but its hard to get the rest of the top in there. Does the front fold twice?

Hope you figured out by now that these convertibles are NOT suppose to have Glass windows. Of course it wont go down the back needs to fold right in the middle. I have a 91 TA convert. Good luck! $1200 too much your getting abused.

Thats why the tops with the glass window are smaller windows that dont need to fold.

That's a ridiculous statemant. Have you ever had any experience with a glass window rear top? If you had, you wouldn't be trying to mislead out members. There are tops such as the StayFast design that have glass and work well.

Readers, please try doing a simple forum search. You'll find tons of info to the contrary of the above quote. Here's a good place to start . . .
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/conv...dow-glass.html
There's also some good advice as to how to lower a glass window top.
Good luck Texas T/A.

If somebody did replace an existing plastic window with one that's glass of the same size, then yes you would have issues. But none of the previous posts clarified that.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

If the shop says the top was installed incorrectly and that's why it won't go down, then why would you need to buy a new one? Just have them remove it an reinstall it the correct way.

And the statement about glass window tops not working is completely false. If they didn't work, nobody would make them and nobody would be buying them like myself an others have. I LOVE mine. And if for some reason by accident I have to replace mine again it will be another glass widow top.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

Let me clear this up.The owner of the shop said it was done incorrectly because of how much material was cut and glued under bow#5 (too short and has come apart on the pass side) The window does lay down but is really a tight fit. The rest of the top doesn't lay flat enough to close the cover. I looked today and the top is a EZon top w/glass window. I've already ripped the cloth on one of the seatbelt towers trying to get this top down. I guess it will have to be a plastic window top that will make it work in my case. I'm sure others have used glass window top because I've seen them.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

Get a top from topsonline.com, they sell plastic and glass. The glass is only $40 more i think. Just go with their top and you'll be happy I gaurantee it. Their glass window tops are top notch. Make sure to order the stayfast top.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

Can you take a picture of the top as far down as you can get it and post it up? The PO of my vert didnt know how to put it down and the way he showed me to do it caused it not to lay down all the way, and I had to figure it out myself.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

I'd be surprised if a new top solved your problems. Where it is installed should not matter when its down, the canvas is not tight when its in the well. If something is bent or missing or whatever on the frame itself, then the top may not collapse correctly and you will not be able to close the cover.

I have not heard of a single person having an issue with a glass window top on these cars. Not one. I think if you go the route of replacing it to solve a problem that likely does not exist, you'll still have a problem.

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

Good point, but I see nothing wrong with the frame. it looks to be all there. The glass barely fits when laid flat in the rear. The rest of the top folds down but kinda bunches up and doesn't lay completely flat. The shop I took it to never tried to lower the top. I'm thinking about getting a second opinion.

Ok then your problem definitely isn't the top. Nobody, NOBODY, has ever had a problem with this top not being able to fold down. If it's because someone cut it too short in the front during installation, that's no fault of the manufacturer. If you're going to buy a new one anyways, why not get the glass one again and actually have someone that knows what they are doing install it?

Re: Trouble with top, won't go down!

Found out what was wrong with my top. It turns out the previous owner bent the rods that help fold the top that last time so it tucks in flat. I'm still going to replace that top with a new one. If anyone wants to buy this top LMK. It looks new still just was installed wrong, wrong glue was used to. Im sure it can be reused
