GM didn't make any production thirdgens with a 350/5spd combo; there was the 1992 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk with a 350/6spd but it was done by SLP and they only made 25 anyway. This Camaro definitely seems odd.

And if this car is so special then why did the owners put 120,000 miles on it?

Re: Custom Order 350/5spd/Vert - Hmmm

they didn't make a 350 5 speed third gen from the factory. ther are however a few 350 verts out there but all the ones i have seen are either formy's, or trans ams.

On the back bumper of the camaro dosent it say tuned port injection which would indicate a 305 Tpi and not 5.7 tuned port injection.
Hard to to tell . But then again no 350 with 5 speed from the factory.

Yep.. No good. Chevy wouldn't do the 350/5 speed due to the transmission not being strong enough to handle the extra hp..or so I've read.

It's my understanding that you could buy a T-top and simply send it to ASC so I suppose it's possible. It'd be a rare care if it's real.

That's true but there wasn't ever a 350/5-speed thirdgen produced. Period. Maybe a couple prototypes but they're probably metal cubes by now anyway.

Re: Custom Order 350/5spd/Vert - Hmmm

When I bought my vert in 2001, the emblem on the back said 5.7 tuned port....after research as many of you have said that was impossible. I think either the person that traded it in or the car lot themselves put the wrong emblem on the car to make a few extra bucks. I would imagine the only way a convertible could have a 350/5 speed is if someone swapped the motor. The only way of knowing is by getting the numbers off of the block.

Re: Custom Order 350/5spd/Vert - Hmmm

THere were at least 4 Camaro 350 convertibles... I have the Sequence number for 4 of them, and they are confirmed 350 cars.
ALL were 1987's
ALL had an automatic transmission
ALL were ASC DEALER conversions

A few things wrong here. I tried to enhance the rear "TunedPortInjection" badge to see if it did say 5.7 - I couldn't tell.

However, did anyone else notice the "1LE" mention in the ad? So lets see - He claims its a 350, 5 speed, 1LE CONVERTIBLE w/ Air Conditioning. I'd say this guy is full of crap. Someone needs to call him on his BS and at least get the VIN to this car to confirm the "F" in the 8th digit.

Crap, the only thing that would make the car a perfect find is if it was painted yellow, and was a Heritage Edition with black stripes.... :sarcasm:

I have heard of these cars; They were produced in "Far, far away..." Seriously, I have heard rumors (Rumors...) of a few being produced for GM executives, but the details change with every re-telling. 8th digit of the VIN: F = 305 TPI. 8 = 350 TPI. Really, the only way to tell...

Well I decoded the vin he posted up in the article and it looks like an original 350 car because the 8th number in the vin is an 8, however the 2 in the 6th digit indicated a coupe; a convertible is supposed to be a 3. Compnine isn't showing any records for that one at all. It's probably bull, but maybe this car was purchased as a normal t-top body then fired off to ASC later for the conversion. Who knows. I wonder if carfax would show something like that.

The top dosent look correct for an asc convertible. It also dosent have the convertible spoiler.
Your right that the vin shows its a coupe.Ive come across a home made vert made from a 5 speed rs coupe using 88 asc vert parts from a wreck, the vin was what gave it away.

Oh yeah I forgot about the spoiler! I wonder how they finished the quarter panels without the caps on the normal convertibles. Wish they had a close up of that.

Re: Custom Order 350/5spd/Vert - Hmmm

1) It is not an ASC, The lack of the tonneau is a giveaway.
2) I have no clue where he got the 1 of 22 ASC 350 convertibles, that is more than likely bogus, Even if he got the number from ASC. ASC is/was NOTORIOUS for bad information. A perfect example is I have a very official looking letter FROM ASC claiming that they only made 10 Formula 350 convertibles in 1989... well I know of about 11 of them, and the Dealer order logs show at least 42... so what gives?

Re: Custom Order 350/5spd/Vert - Hmmm

Its probably an RS II+,not a Z-28. It does have the Factory style conv. cap, you need to look closer at the pictures. As far as no 350's with a 5-speed issue; I have driven TWO factory 350 5-speed camaros, both were 1991 "Police B4C" vehicles, with the rear end and brake assemblies for 1993 4rth gen's. Nice how the factory occasionally slipped future production parts into cop cars for real world testing. Both of these cars were purchased by the officers who used them on patrol, as soon as Texas DPS designated the vehicles, to be sold.

The White car is a ASC, the RED car is not. There are two conversations going on.

Ahhhh.. No... Both of those cars you speek of would have been 305's, and if they had a 350 someone installed either a 350 OR the 5 speed. Get us a VIN and we will discuss this further.

The LB9/M5 was a quick car, they were about as fast as a 350 car. Keep in mind the TPI was designed for a 305, Only after complaints of a possible 305 installed in the Corvette did they decide to go with the 350.

Some of the crazy ideas that just keep floating around out there (both in ads and on the messageboards) is exactly why I posted this topic. It's amazing how there's just no end to it. All I hope is that a few of our readers and potential buyers learn from this and don't fall into the crazy rumour trap (as entertaining as it is ). Never seems to be a shortage of misinformation!

Hey, looks like my car. Although mine is 89. I have a 350tpi and a t-5, but thats because it originally was a 305 TBI w/ auto.

And yes, the torque is the problem, the car is very difficult to drive in first gear.

Notice the ad for the white car lists it has ABS as well. Another feature not available ever on a thirdgen.

It has the following features listed as equipped.
ABS, Dual Air Bags, Tilt/Telescoping steering wheel.

nope.
