89 Camaro Convertible parts questions

OK so I bought a project car. Of concern to me, is 1) the trunk latch is missing, and 2) the pin that goes through the center of the deck to latch the top down seems to be missing from the last top bow. Is it bolted on or part of the bow? Any shade tree ways or repair kits to replace this missing part? How about replacment trunk latches? I'm sure there may be other missing pieces as I really haven't done much more than bring the car home. I put the top down once to see how it all works. Thanks in advance!

Be patient and look around for parts, lots of members here have what you need. Verts are rare in junkyards.

Take your time, and keep telling yourself "its a project" - that's what I do.

Top down solution don't have s__t jersey89GTA said take time. I'm doing and convertible that had a lot pieces missing, staying on the Internet and eBay I eventually found everything I needed all in the color I needed because I didn't want to paint the parts. It took some time but I got everything.

Yours HAD a motorized hatch (trunk) pull-down unit when it left the factory. Same one as the t-top and hard top cars. In mod 91 they changed the pull-down unit on the t-top and hard top cars to a different design. At that time they also changed to a non-motorized latch for the trunk of the convertibles.

89 convertible with motorized pull down for the trunk.

can I swap to a NON MOTORIZED setup....maybe from a 91+ ?

Is there a direct fit?

Thanks

Re: 89 Camaro Convertible parts questions

You would need to cut the mount from a 91.5-92 car to swap it for the one in your car. As AmorgetRS said, not a direct fit.

Re: 89 Camaro Convertible parts questions

Dissemble and clean out the old dried grease, re-lube and reassemble will solve the slow condition. I use synthetic marine grease.

Re: 89 Camaro Convertible parts questions

That grease is too sticky IMO. If you can't use the synthetic marine grease, then use white lithium grease. I used white lithium and recommended it before I switched to the synthetic marine grease. White lithium has a buttery smooth consistency which is very similar to the original light colored blue grease GM used. However with time it dries out and needs to be replaced.
