Rear speakers

What is everyone running for the rear speakers in their convertibles?

When I stripped the interior out of my '91 Firebird vert "Phoenix" I found 4" rounds int he back. I need to replace them since one is blown.

Anyone put a 6X9 back there like the Coupes have stock?

Re: Rear speakers

I put 6x9s in my 91 TA. It is possible if you get a 1inch think speaker grill ( sold on ebay) and a 1/4inch piece of masonite to make it a little thicker. I cut the masonite to fit behind the grill after I painted it black. Find exactly the right spot to cut the hole after you remove the inside trim. And, it fits very close but it does fit.

Re: Rear speakers

Ok thank you. was the 1" speaker grill a universal part or is it specific to our cars?

Re: Rear speakers

Mine came with 6.5 inch rounds so I went with the same when replacing. I've put in 2 sets over the years the first being Rockford Fosgate and the second Polk. Many on the market but with such a tight clearance we have on convertibles, you have to worry about the mounted height of the speaker and mounting plate. I drive them with a 260 watt amp that also drives my sub and they are powerful enough for listening with the top down.

Re: Rear speakers

When I do mine, can you still use the original speaker grill so it looks original?

I would think you could but you will definitely need to have spacers.

Re: Rear speakers

And, maybe do some work on the bolt alignment for mounting.

Re: Rear speakers

I kept the originals and recovered them with new material. I had to cut a spacer to make sure the speaker did not sit to far into the area and block the convertible top mech.

It seems that the cars made after my build date may have been made with different size speakers. People were talking about 6x9's but mine was originally a 6.5 round and I stuck with them along with their originally sized covers. Just had to watch the clearance and get a little creative inside the mounting panel.

Re: Rear speakers

For some reason I thought I had some goofy 5x7 speaker or something odd that you cannot find anywhere...

I have thought about the component type round speaker and have a filler to take up the gap...

Re: Rear speakers

I think that most were the 6.5" rounds. That's what mine came with. But since the passenger rear is dead, I am looking to upgrade and I was figuring that a set of Kicker 6X9's will sound better that a 6.5".

Re: Rear speakers

I actually have a set of 6" Kicker substation speakers... I wonder how well that would work out? People would laugh if they knew, but they sound "right" not too boomy...

What is the difference between a substation and a regular speaker?

Re: Rear speakers

When I pulled the original speakers back in about 2002, the way they were mounted on the rear of the interior panel looked like it had been put together by a 4 year old. They used some 1/8 black interior grade plastic that was cut on a band saw for a spacer and the panel hole was just as rough. There were several "mistake" drill holes that showed me ASC was just trying to make everything fit right.

It had the appearance of somebody trying to figure out what size and shape speaker could fit in the cavity without any interference. We just need to remember that these were not true "production" cars and many of the plastic and other vert specific items were molded, cut, or trimmed to fit each vehicle. There was not enough production volume to do anything better.

The substation I have is merely a sub-woofer, I know the magnets are about the same size as the speaker themselves, so I really doubt that it would work. I would probably have to make a special enclosure in the trunk area...

What I am calling the substation may not be the same thing as what they offer now. What I have is assembled in a Tube. The part number is KS60 (which looks nothing like the new KS60).

More or less the speakers I have are just a 6" sub woofer... and believe it or not they sound amazingly good for their size. I set it up with the pair of subs on a 200W amp, and using the 40W amp from the Receiver, the balance was almost perfect. It sounded great... It did not rattle the sheet metal mind you, but it sounded clean.
