car over heating
car over heating
My camaro has recently started to overheat. First I put in a low temp termostat but that dint work. So I removed the thermostad. Now it still overheating after I drive it for about 25 minutes. I just put in a new water pump so thats not it any of u know what it might be. If you have any info on what might be causing this I would be gratefull.
Are you actually over heating ? are you smoking ? I dont mean to ask you a dumb question lol
...But, what Im saying is , it might be your temperature sending unit . Get a new radiator cap - this may not fix your problem , BUT its cheap , and the caps can go bad and cause the car to overheat . This happened to me about 5 months ago , I started overheating , I thought "well it could be the cap , may not be the cap either " I bought a new cap and it fixed it !!! Whens the last time you flushed your radiator ? If its been awhile and you can't remember , FLUSH IT , it can't hurt you , it will only help you ! flush it and put a 50/50 water/antifreeze mixture . Id first get a new cap and flush it , then if its not one of those , Id try the temperature sending unit .
Also , how dirty is your radiator on the outside ? Do you need to give it some shoots with the hose to wash all those bugs and crapola off ?
ALSO , do you have the proper spoiler ( dont know if this is the proper name for it ) But , I know the V8s have them , but its like a plastic black piece under your car that you can see from the sides , this piece forces the air up to your radiator . Sometimes when our cars are wrecked from previous owners or even when you get in a wreck and the shop repairs your car , this piece is not always put back on and can cause you to run hot . If you look in the "Engine General tech section" in the search forum under overheating there is a pic of a camaro with the spoiler thingy or whatever you call it under the car . It's there cus I asked someone to post if for someone
If you cant find it in the search , just ask them to post it again .
Oh , two more things I forgot .....with your engine OFF ...Id even disconnect the battery (freak accidents do happen) check your fan blade for cracks , this can cause you to over heat . IF you see no cracks , then turn your motor on , let it idle and make sure your fan(s) are coming on .
Ok , so let me sum all this up for you , you want to
1. check your fan blades for cracks .
2. then , is your fan coming on ? let it idle and watch it .
3. get a new radiator cap
4. change the temp sending unit
5. Id flush the radiator anyway , if it has not been done in awhile , it can only help it .
Sorry to write such a long book , but theres an answer in here to your problems .

define what you think is overheating...i have alot of smoke comming from my manifolds in the engine compartment when it reaches over 220* on the temp gauge, but no smoke from my tail pipe at all. i mean not like thick white smoke but like i dunno kinda like light white steam smoke...sorta but only when it gets really hot. and i just rebuilt the engine. thermostat works fine opens at about 200* rated to open at 195* 50/50 mix of antifreeze, flex fan, removed all a/c components, heater core is good and have airdam under car.
that sounds like your overheating . BUT it does not sound like your running hot enough to overheat . From the areau the smoke is coming from , I was thinking , busted head gasket . but isnt that usually kinda like a white smoke and coming out the tail pipes ? Is it possible your leaking some antifreeze ? Sounds like your leaking some antifreeze to me .
But what temp is that at ? ? How far is the temp needle over 220 ?

im curious as to why you put a 195* thermostat back in there? A 180 or 160 thermostat. You would be surprised what 15 degrees cooler would do.

Does it leak any after you park it ? Im wondering maybe if your freeze plugs are leaking some and causing it to smoke like that ?

Some people just like "stock " parts . To each his own .
Putting a 160 or 180 thermastat in would NOT solve the problem though . But it would only help . Lets SOLVE this problem man .
Not to bash on your ideau at all Stuart or dis ya bud .
Something else just hit me ! ...Go out and raise your hood . Put it in park ( neatral if its stick ) give the engine a few good revs , (you dont have to redline it ) but just give it a few revs WHILE someone stands looking at the bottem radiator hose . Does it collapse or bend when you rev it ? If so , you need a new hose . There is metal , or a spring in the bottem hose that causes it not to bend or collapse . When you go to the parts store make sure you get one that wont collapse with a spring or piece of metal in it . The part's guys should know what you want !

just that he said that he just bought a new thermostat and the 180*is the same price...
Didn't say that it would fix, just that i don't understand why people would refuse to put better parts in at the same price
