stumped

Hey guys, I bought a 92 RS last week and have ran across a problem. Test drove it for 30 mins. or so and it ran fine. Drove it all weekend and it ran fine. Pulled in my drive and the temp was 240. Changed the thrmostat, sending unit and fan switch. Got a laser temp gun from work and let the gauge in the dash get to 280 and shot the waterneck (225), outgoing hose (200), incoming hose (200), and intake near sending unit (210). I also got another gauge but when I hooked it up the car wpud'nt start,( I guess a senor thing). So I took the rad cap off and let the car heat up to 260 by the gauge inthe dash and drop the temp sensor from my new gauge to the bottom off the rad and it read 205 at the highest. I also looked in the rad with a flash light and the inside looks literally brand new. I havnt checked the timing. but it does apper to have a small spark knock sound when I get on the trottle a little more than usual. The spark knock sound gets worse when it gets above 230. But its never really bad. Otherwisw the car runs great. I think the gauge may be freakin out and the timing is just set too high. Plan to work on it more tomarrow. Any ideas. Stock 305 170hp E version. ohyeh with the laser pointed at the water neck the fan comes on at about 225. But the gauge int the dash reads 260 or more.
Thanks, ran038
