My Car Hit over 220 I figured out why

When I drove it home today I was at 240 or so. I pulled in my driveway and it began to leak. I popped the hood and there is a hole in my radiator with jets of hot steam coming out. It has been doing this for sometime now but without the hole. This isnt going to hurt my engine is it? Is there a way I can patch it up so that I can get another one. How much should I pay for a new one? Can I install it myself or have someone do it for me Thanks

Car: 91 Camaro RS Update: Sold Camaro, now own a "91" Corvette.
Engine: Corvette L98 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Just replace the radiator with a new one. Autozone has an aluminum replacement for about $115 or you could get a Griffin (slight modifications will have to be made for the mounts) all aluminum for $189 from Summit or Jeg's. The Radiator is very easy to replace.

A new radiator was like 100 bucks or so for an OEM replacement at Autozone?? i think it was there.. I would also be concerned on why your car overheated. make sure the fans are turning on, and that the air dam is placed properly.

Will it hurt ur car, yes and no...no as in nothing a rebuild wont fix. but sometimes the freeze plugs may become overheated and melt creating a constant coolant leak, or you could burn through some gaskets, etc.

but first i would get a new radiator...and work from there....

since ur replacing the radiator..it might be a good idea to replace the hoses too.

No prob. I found a aluminum one at O'Reillys for 130 or so. Ya I'll replace the hoses and should I replace the fan with a flex fan or other aftermarket one???

well, u know, i was just assuming that you had electric fans but if u have the standard fan that is on the water pump...then ur fan was obviously turning....so i would just replace radiator..hoses...and make sure the antifreeze/coolant levels were mixed properly with water...might even try some water wetter or something like that to keep it cool if you continue to have overheating problems.

make sure to replace the thermostat too...i replace mine often because its pretty cheap and easy to replace...speaking of which..i think its time to replace mine...grrr.

edit: i just read your sig...i should have done that in the first place.

anyway...just make sure that when the car hits a current temp..i think about 210 * i am pretty sure i'm wrong on the temp* the fans come on to help cool the car....or you could just rig up a simple fan switch like i did fro my car...i have the dual fans and even went to the trouble of coordinating the right switch/right fan left switch left fan deal..
