Where to mount an oil temp sender?

I'm going to install an Autometer engine oil temp guage. I just don't know where to put the sender. I read in Lingenfelter's book to put it in the hole above the oil filter. My brother is finishing up a small block and is trying to put in a sender too. So I told him to try putting it in that spot. But the sender is slightly smaller and a different thread pitch, no way to use any form of adapter. The only other option I have heard of is having a bung welded to the oil pan. I am going to be putting in a new oil pan in my engine later this week. But I am rushed for time. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Install a bung in the side of the oil pan about 2 1/2" from the bottom.
