running too cool?
running too cool?
ok, after a 3 month long ordeal that cost way too much money, I finally got my car running cool. only problem is, I think its too cool. I had a 180 thermostat in it, when the fan was wired on, and it hardly ever got about 165-170. we got a Jet fan switch so that the fan turns on at 176 and off at 166, and at the same time we put in a 160 thermostat. now, it wont get about 140. I know it needs to run warmer, but what can I do, get a 195 thermostat?

I dunno that there is even a 195 made for LT1's. I thought OEM was 180. I think 180 is ideal; 170 is about perfect for power according to some, and below that, you're gonna wear your motor a little more. So I like the 180 stat idea.

195 is stock operating temp for almost every car sold in the last 15 or so years. An OE stat will come through at 195. This is why I am the dissenter about all this low fan switch, stats etc. Turning the fans on at 175 or so doesn't accomplish anything. At that low operating temp fuel economy suffers. If you are concerned probably the best setup is a 180 stat with a fan turn on at around 200-210. This will let the engine operate in it's target range temp wise and allow all emission equipment to function properly. With the setup you have now you are limited to what stat you use because any other stat you put in will not open until AFTER the fans kick on. I am not trying to be a wise ***, but I have tried every temp stat, different fan temps and found almost every change to be counter productive. If you are keeping the engine that cool your fans are probably running almost all the time. I guarantee within a year it will be alternator time, not withstanding the time you take from the fan motors. I would try to set my goal for keeping the engine temp under 220 if possible. That will let the engine stay in it's ideal temp range, and still run well below the danger zone. I am running zz-4, otherwise all stock components and yesterday here it was 100 deg when I left work. My average temp with AC running was just under the 220 line, and that is 50/50 mix stop and go driving. Stay
thanks for the info Danno, but let me clear up a few things.
1. Its running this cool with the fan off. Today, on the way up to the shop, I turned the a/c on, fan is off. After 10 miles of driving, just as I got to the shop did it reach 160.
2. I have gone through so many alternators its funny, I guess now I know why. Im not real worried about burning up the fan motor because even when I had the 180 in, it didnt go above that until I turned the a/c on, and then only when I slowed down in the city. Besides, it'd give me a good reason to get a dual fan setup.
3. and yes, the stock thermostat for the LT1 is 180, I checked about 5 times.
4. no emissions equipment to worry about

Additionally, the 'stat controls minimum operating temp, so that's where your problem is. We're all glad you're having this prob. instead of the other one

Learn something every day. Never seen 180 as stock any cars for I don't know how long. Did you modify the fan NOT to come on with AC. They automatically come on when AC is requested. That may be why she's running cool.

The LT1's use a reverse flow cooling system right? cause the autozone website list a 195 for a 95 camaro, but its the same part # as the L98.. well some of them are..

-yeah, the AutoZone one is absolutely wrong. the LT1 stat is a 2-stage or something, the bottom plate is connected to the main plate or some **** that opens them both.....or something along those lines.

-well, we didnt do it on purpose, but yeah the fan does not come on automatically with the a/c, right now its not controlled by the computer. we simply ran a wire from the fan switch to the ground terminal on the fan relay so that it would close the circuit when the temperature was reached. how would that cause it to run cool? when I turn the a/c on during the day, it slowly causes it to overheat after about 20 minutes of highway driving. but Im not real worried about that, I know its because of the a/c compressor pulling down too much power, I'm trying to find a replacement.
