Another cooling prob!

First off, I'm sure this has been asked over and over and over again. I have a '92 TBI 305 and can't keep it from overheating. Especially sitting still. It still has the factory airdam and useless single electric fan. First question, any ideas on what to do? Second question, will this fit? LS1 electric fans, measurements are 28"x18"x6

Thanx

I have a 91 305 tbi and I also had a similar problem. I flushed the cooling system, ran a 70:30 cooland mix, changed the t-stat to 160 degrees, installed a 160 deg Hypertech switch and just for backup, I installed another radiator mounted thermostat switch also set at 160 degrees. The latter may not be necessary but it gives me some piece of mind. With this setup, my car runs in 195 - 200 degree range everytime. I also forgot to mention that I also replaced my intake manifold gasket because I had a small coolant leak from the front of the manifold. All these fixes now make my car run cooler.

The fan question I am not sure about. That one you'll have to check out. If you add dual fans you will need additional wiring and an extra fan relay. When you say overheating how hot does it get? A 160 stat is too cold for these engines. It will come out of open loop but you will have a decrease in fuel economy. Is your electric fan running? It is not useless, they actually work pretty good. Is the front of the rad free from leaves etc? Normal fan turn on is between 225-240 degrees depending on which fan switch is used. Don't even consider putting in a 160 degree fan switch, it will never shut off. With a switch that low the fans will almost constantly cycle and you'll be putting in an alternator every year or so. If you have a 238 degree fan switch you can go down to one around 215 or so. NAPA stocks two different ones and they are about $19. The biggest problem with these things are poor quality fan relays. They become intermittent and the contacts don't always line up internally causing intermittent or no fan operation. The new ones from NAPA and GM are different design. While I concur that these cars run hot, if everything is operating properly and the cooling system is clean and of proper mix you can tame her down heat wise. I have an 89 with a zz4 block, all else completely stock and even with the air on in this heat we had she ran right around 210-220 degrees, well within the safety margin.

The fan is coming on properly, I've pulled the rad. and condensor and cleaned everything, flushed the rad., installed a 180 thermostat(anything lower makes the computer read that the car is colder and in return causes the car to run rich which leads to washing out your rings which leads to smoking which leads to a rebuild, etc...). The air deflector is in the right place but that is insignificant to my problem being that my car overheats while moving slowly and/or sitting still. Thanks for the help though.

so maybe the pump aint doing its job its moving the water too slow thru the radiator and you dont overheat at higher speed because your getting ram air effect,
