TBI models should have only one fan according to my service info. Anyway the dark green/white wire is the one that gets grounded through a switch. Make sure you have the right relay. One way to verify it is to turn on the AC, the fan should come on then unplug the relay. If it's the right one it will turn off. If you have one fan you have one relay for control, not two.

So i need to ground the Green/White stripe wire???

There is a Black/Red stripe wire comming off of the fan so i assume it's the Relay #2

I thought you have to find the power wire and connect that to a switch..............then when you switch it on it sends power to the wire and the fan turns on???

Thanks...

I dont remember off hand but just run your car up to temp and when the fan kicks on use a test light to see which is ground then follow it back, I'm fairly sure the wire on the L/DS is the ground wire.

i have eletric dual fans and i am not that familar with the tbi models but hears what i did.

i have the factory fan swith which comes on from the factory at like 13X something.

i took that same wire (i believe it was a gray wire) and just spliced into that wire before it goes into the relay and at the end of that new wire i put a regular toggle switch. the other connection was to hook another new wire to the other end of that switch to a ground somewhere on the car body.

now i just flip the switch and it grounds the relay anytime turning the fan on, just like the fan switch grounds the relay at the certain temperature.

I've just been all thru the entire fan system on my 90 RS ... here's the deal.

Green/white wire going into the fan relay (the one you termed as Relay #2) can be grounded and the fan will run continuously as long as the key is in ON position. I suppose if you wanted to, you could run a switch on the green/white wire to control when it is on, after ignition is in ON position.

I'm not sure why however. This would mean that YOU have to look at the guage always (and hope it's accurate, mine is NOT), and control your own fan always.

Why not just let the fan switch do the work? Fan switch not working? Hypertech makes nice ones that work for $40 - Thunder Racing and Summit has 'em - they turn fan on at 200 and off at 185. I just replaced mine and now my fan works like a champ.

There's a great tech article on this site, that I used. Easy to follow, and no worries about shorting out, because all you're doing is putting in an additional ground wire.

Wouldn't recomend trying to add additional live wires into the circuit, unless you know what you're doing with the rekays.

FLYINLOW, were you after somebody posting 89 RS build sheets? I managed to stick all the bits together from mine.

You never run power through a switch to control the fan. By grounding the grn/wht wire you activate the fan relay and you let 12 volts flow through the relay to the fan. The fan draws considerable current and both the switch and wire would be so large as to make it impractical. Always use the existing fan relay and simply ground the switch side of the relay as described.

No that wasn't me......

Alright thanks guys, I'll just ground the Green/White Stripe wire and the fan will always be on whenever in the on position.....

Another alternative is just to get an adjustable mechanical thermostat switch (Hayden) from any auto parts store then just splice that to the green/white wire. I did this on my camaro and the switch allows me to run the fan continuously (switch off) or turn the fan on at whatever temperature I want, depending on the thermostat I use. This is a very simple installation and gives you a lot of flexibility and control over your cooling system.

Peace,

Rene
