cooling fan problem
Hey guys I have been reading all the stuff in this section on the cooling fan, but i havent see my problem come up. I have a 92 camarors with the 305 tbi. the problem that i am having is the fan will not kick on when the temp gets to or past 220, but will if i kick on the ac. I have canged the cooling fan switch, temp gauge sending unit, coolent temp senser for the computer and still nothing. can some one tell me if the cooling fan relay has two side to it one for the ac and one for the temp control? I know that 91 and 92 are diff from the earlier ones. I am just lost with this nothing i seem to do helps it. I also need a conecter for the fan switch it still conects it just dont lock, I dont think that is it I taped it in place when i was ops cking the fan switch. well any advice would be appriciated.

Under normal operation "no ac" than fan is controlled by the switch in the passenger side head. Did you use teflon tape or silicone on the threads? That could insulate the switch "not allow it to ground" just enough to prevent it from operating.

find out how many amps the fan runs (usually 5 i think). Find something that runs the same amperage on the fuse block when the ignition is turned on. One side of the wire goes to one of the prongs on the fuse the other side of the wire is connected to the positive on the fan motor.
It's ghetto, but it works. It saved my *** when i was driving back from houston in an old dodge minivan and the relay on the fan motor went out at 3am. i was almost stranded. Good thing i keep my tools with me all the time.

Don't even consider doing that. The fan motors get thier voltage through a fuse link that goes directly to the battery. 92 models with TBI do not use the ECM for fan control. The fan switch in the block grounds at temp specified(either 225 or 238)and turns on the fan relay which feeds 12 volts to the fan motor. To test wiring take the wire connected to the block sender and simply ground it anywhere you can get a good ground and with key on-engine off the fan should run. As far as teflon tape is concerned most of the time the threads will cut through enough to provide ground for the sender. Depends on how much was used and how it is installed(torque). The fan motor can and typically does draw in excess of 15 amps at start-this is not a load you want in the fuse panel. If you want manual control which I am totally against put in a switch to ground the same wire that comes from the sender. If you need more help PM me and I'll walk you through it. DO NOT under any circumstance do what the last post said. I saved this post, so I did not see that you grounded the wire. I was a victim of this latest virus circulating. Had to wipe everything clean and reinstall operating system. Dan

Thanks for the update danno, like i said in my post, this was done on an old dodge minivan.I've never rigged a camaro up like this but i figured it might work the same at least as a temp fix if he was desperate. Either way man, best of luck with hooking everything up. Tell us how it goes.

I changed out the switch again this time from advance auto parts and this one was bad also. I did what you mentioned in your post before I read it, so its good to see that we were on the same page on using the wire that went to the fan switch. I am pretty new at this computer stuff but I'm not quite that ignorite. I think i got the fan thing straight and i took it out for a drive and was great in town but when i got on the highway it really got hot, had to stop to cool it off. so i got home and looked for the air damn and it wasn't there, so i went to the yard and found one on a iroc that was wrecked, and also the air deflector that mounts under the rad. I think this was alot of my problem at speeds i will find out tomarow. I realy appriciate all the help guy THANKS Sean
