Coolant Leak
Coolant Leak
Coolant is leaking from somewhere under my car. It is coming out right in front of the catylitic converter, but I can't tell exactly where. Normally I would put the car on jack stands and check it out, but it is 20 degrees outside and im not up for that. I just replaced my heater core because it was leaking and then I still noticed a small leak, not on the ground, but my coolant resevoir kept going low. Today it just started leaking everywhere though. It is running out along a hole in the frame(kind of where you put the jack stands) If someone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

Check the two hoses going to the heater core. A very common mistake is either over tightening the hose clamps, or not tightening them enough. That is where iI would start considering you just replaced it

Ok, I looked underneath the car and couldn't see it coming from anywhere obvious. I looked under the hood and the hoses look fine. I took the panel off by the dash and there is coolant lining where the heater core cover goes. Why would it be leaking, and how would it get outside the car?
I checked the hoses going into the heater core and they are not wet at all. I checked all of the hoses I could see and it is not wet anywhere visible in the whole engine compartment. The only place that I can see coolant coming out is that square support bar that goes from the front to the back of the car.

If the hoses are all good and tight, there is a good chance the heater core itself is leaking. You may have put a hole in it by accident. This does happen, they are very fragile. Bad part is you may have to take it all apart again. Also check the back of the engine itself, before you pull out the core again. You may even have a intake gasket leak or even a head gasket leak. Check both these thins and then move on from there.
What car is this?? Year, make , model and which engine??? It could also be the knock sensor depending on the car... Let me know.

My car is an 86' Trans am 305 TPI Lb9. How would I tell if it was coming from the back of the engine. IT is really hard to see back there. Also I hope it isn't the intake gasket cause I replaced it this year already. How would I find out for sure??

If you just replaced the intake gasket too. This may be the problem. Take off the plenum extension and get flash light or something to give you some light. Now that Iknow you engine is a TPI. Also check the knock sensor on the passenger side of the block, it is under the exhaust maniflod. Look around these places and see what you come up with. Let me know.

alright, spent a lot of time looking, pressure testing and here is what I found. There is a rubber house going from one of the tubes on the heater core.. It is then attatched to a steal pipe. My buddy told me that it goes from the heater core to the front of the intake manifold or the water pump, but I can't quite see really well. We found that out because that pipe is wet, but the hose is fine. Let me know if you know what I am talking about.
